The casino movement in the Kingdom of Hungary also found a response in Modra, which belonged to the category of smaller towns. It is a previously unknown development, not mentioned in the comprehensive study of the casino movement. The author’s analysis is based on hitherto unknown documents. She clarifies the process of establishment of a town casino, analyses the leadership of the club and its relationship to the Slovak casino. The latter originated on an ethnic basis and came into a long-term conflict with the town casino. Both casinos became venues for cultivated social life, differentiation of political positions in a revolutionary period and a form of national representation.

Restoration and preservation of urban systems, such as town fortifications, is a complex issue which requires a systematic approach in order to achieve compatibility between the aims and goals of conservationists, design architects and municipal administration. This paper describes a methodology for the preparation of project documentation for the restoration of town fortification in the city of Modra. With some modifications, it can be applied to similar situations in documenting the development of urban space in Slovakia or abroad.

Medieval Hungarian society underwent significant changes during the 15th century, which brought many new possibilities for social application. In particular, this affected the inhabitants of the Hungarian cities, who had, in the previous century, gained considerable independence from the power and ownership structures in the country. In the 15th century, the transition to fully emancipated urban settlements with accumulated power and economic potential was completed. This change can best observed through the minutious study of individual persons from this period. A model example of this is the fate and story of the Trnava burgess Erhard Modrer, whose ancestors had played a significant role in the urban formation of Modra, and had also been members of the administrations of Trnava and Kremnica. The example of Erhard Modrer illustrates how, in this period, urban elites were ascending to the highest positions, even reaching the status of the Hungarian nobility.
