This study deals with the issues surrounding the influence of “Maffie” members on the operation of the Czechoslovak state during the first years of its existence (1919–1921). Attention is primarily focused on Přemysl Šámal the man and his accession to the Office of the President of the Republic. His activities significantly contributed towards the formation of the position of so called Castle (Hrad) as a power group that had an influence on events in the young state.

The aim of this article is to take a closer look at the life-work of the first Czechoslovak professoress Milada Paulová, which was a study of the Czech and Yugoslav resistance in the period of the First World War. The article outlines the question of alignment in the Czech historical sciences in interwar Czechoslovakia. The next subject is the divergence of opinion between the old and the young academic generations - is modern and contemporary history journalism or science?

In her contribution, the author deals with a complexview of the role of Sokol during the World War I. She uses both archive sources as well as available literature. She confronts the Sokol activity with philosophy of Miroslav Tyrš, co-founder of Sokol, who promoted the ideal of military service and the work of an individual for the improvement of the whole. Sokol members were active in both the Czechoslovak Legions (in France, Russia and Italy) and domestic resistance movement (financial support of so-called Maffie, intelligence activity). Because of military hospitals established in Sokol gymnasiums, the club activity was demonstrated rather on the social-cultural or charity level (assistance in military hospitals, cooperation with charity organization České srdce [Czech Heart]). On 28 October 1918 and shortly after this date, Sokol members helped keep order in the street and secure non-violent retreat of foreign forces from the territory.

The current paper aims at exploring the political and journalistic activities of František Sís during the First World War. In this study I focus on several issues. First, I will sketch, in brief, the cooperation between František Sís and his younger brother Vladimir Sís at the beginning of WWI. Secondly, I am going to explore the role of F. Sís in the establishing of the politico-intellectual circle and journal Národ (Nation). Needless to say, my intention is to demonstrate, through analysis of F. Sís’ publications in this journal that these served as an “intellectual weapon” against the so-called “activist” politicians, grouped around the Czech Alliance and National Committee. Further, I will concentrate on investigating the role of F. Sís in forming the new political party, Czech Constitutional Law Democracy in 1917–1918. Then, I will tackle the issue of political cooperation between the so-called Kramář circle on the one side, and other Slav nations, such as the Poles and Yugoslavs, on the other, in 1918. Last but not least, I will explore František Sís’ concept of postwar Czechoslovakia and his vision of Slav solidarity.
