The contribution analyzes the construction of an authorial persona in the proem of the Astronomica, emphasizing the dual nature of the endeavor itself, as well as the intricacies of the poet’s position with respect to the subject matter of his song. The focus on the proem to Astronomica I allows for a more precise tracing of the techniques and devices employed to acquire the authority and credibility necessary for a didactic enterprise.

Poemat dydaktyczny Astronomica, napisany w pierwszym wieku n.e. przez Marka Maniliusza, jest najprawdopodobniej najbardziej znaczącym tekstem dotyczącym starożytnej astrologii. Zawarta w nim budowa wszechświata służy również do ukazania, jak w czasach pryncypatu wyglądały relacje Rzymian z innymi ludami. Dla Maniliusza, w centrum kosmosu znajduje się bóg, opisuje on również umowy pomiędzy gwiazdami używając do tego rzymskich rodzajów traktatów, takich jak foedus, hospitium czy societas. Ostatecznie jednak Maniliusz stwierdza, że wszystkie umowy pomiędzy ciałami niebieskimi są krótkotrwałe, ponieważ są one swoimi naturalnymi i wiecznymi wrogami. W tym kontekście można analizować wykorzystanie astrologii do politycznej manipulacji.

The didactic poem Astronomica, written by Marcus Manilius in 1st century A.D., is probably one of the most significant texts about the ancient astrology. The construction (system) of the universe is also used to show the international relations between Rome and other nations under the Principate. For Manilius the centre of the universe is deus. He also describes the agreement between stars using roman form of treaties: foedus, hospitium, societas. Finally, he shows that all treaties are short-term because signs of the zodiac are natural and eternal enemies. In this context we can analyse the use of astrology to political manipulation.

Дидактическая поэма Астрономика, написанная в первом столетии н.е. Марком Манильюшом, является наиболее знаменательным текстом, касающимся древней астрологии. Заключенная в нём структура вселенной служит также к представлению, как во временах принципату выглядели отношения римлян с другими народами. За Манильюшем, в центре космоса расположен бог. Описывает он также договоры между звездами, используя к этому римские види договоров, такие как foedus, hospitium или societas. В конечном счете однако Манильюш констатирует, что все договоры между небесными телами кратковременны, потому что они являются природными и вечными врагами. В этом контексте можно анализировать использование астрологии к политической манипуляции.
