Kraków jest jednym z wiodących skupień nowych branż gospodarki w Polsce. W oparciu m.in. o wywiady pogłębione autorzy dyskutują główne czynniki i mechanizmy rozwoju branży biotechnologicznej, IT i zaawansowanych usług biznesowych, prezentując ścieżki rozwoju poszczególnych branż oraz omawiając ich środowisko instytucjonalne. Stwierdzono, że rozwój branży biotechnologicznej opiera się o lokalne zasoby (dzięki efektom spin off) i wsparcie publiczne. Sektor nowoczesnych usług jest klasycznym przykładem ścieżki rozwojowej, opartej niemal wyłącznie o impulsy z zewnątrz. Branża usług IT zawdzięcza swój rozwój zarówno zewnętrznym impulsom, jak i lokalnej przedsiębiorczości. Znacząca jest rola korzyści dywersyfikacji i znaczenie branż pokrewnych jako ułatwiających przepływy pracowników.

Krakow is one of the leading centres of rising industries in Poland, including biotechnology, IT and advanced business services. The authors discuss the factors of the development of these three sectors by exploration of statistical data and in-depth interviews, and analyse development paths and institutional environment. It was found that the development of the biotechnology industry is based mainly on local resources and public support. The BPO/SSC sector is a classic example of a development path based almost exclusively on the activity of external investors, while IT industry owes its development both to external impulses (FDI in software development centres) and to local entrepreneurship. The article highlights the role of diversification externalities and the importance of related industries as a factor facilitating the employees’ flows. The strong adaptability of Krakow’s economy is built on its diversity and position in the corporate networks.
