Дамаскин (Цедрик), епископ Глуховский и Нежинский, – архиерей начала XX в., священномученик, проживший долгую и трудную жизнь. Обладающий необыкновенной тягой к знаниям и неординарным талантом к иностранным языкам и проповеди христианства в среде иноверных, он начинал как выдающийся миссионер, научно подходящий к проблемам освоения чуждых культур (бурятской, тунгусской, китайской) и проповеди носителям этих культур. Революционные события оборвали путь миссионера и исследователя, и еп. Дамаскин стал одним из первых поборников истинно-христианских идей в Русской Церкви, которая погружалась в обновленчество и сотрудничество с большевицкой властью. Статья является обзором биографии еп. Дамаскина (Цедрика) до его рукоположения во епископы в 1923 г.

Damascene (Tsedrik), Bishop of Glukhov and Nezhinsk, was a hierarch of the early 20th century and a hieromartyr to the faith. He lived a long and difficult life. Having an unusually strong desire to study and an exceptional talent for foreign languages, as a gifted preacher of Christianity amongst those of other faiths, he started out as an exceptional missionary. With an academic, scientific approach towards foreign cultures he came into contact with the Buriat, Tungus, Chinese and preached the Gospel to these peoples. The events of the Russian Revolution cut short his work as a missionary and scholar, and Bishop Damascene became one of the first defenders of the idea of True Orthodox Christianity in the Russian Church, as it was being swallowed up by renovationism and compromise and collaboration with the bolshevik authorities. This article is an overview of Bishop Damascene Tsedrik's biography before his consecration as bishop in 1923.

Статья посвящена одному из самых известных архиереев гонимой Русской Церкви начала XX в. Дамаскину (Цедрику). На основе документальных материалов прослеживается его биография вплоть до мученической кончины в Карагандинском лагере (1937 г.). Автор анализирует и просветительскую, миссионерскую и исповедническую деятельность архипастыря, подробно излагает исторические обстоятельства его ареста и гонений на Церковь, жизни Катакомбной Церкви, делает выводы о положении Русской Церкви в России XX в.

This article is about one of the best known hierarchs of the persecuted Russian church at the turn of the XXth century, Damaskin Tsedrik. Based on archival documents, it traces his biography up until his death as a martyr in the Karaganda concentration camp in 1937. The author analyses the educational and missionary work and preaching of this hierarch, relates in detail the circumstances and historical background of his arrest, the persecution of the Church, the life of the Catacomb Church, and his conclusions about the circumstances of the Russian Church in Russia of the XXth century.
