The author investigates the standing of the theory of humanitarian intervention in the context of the development of the thought of M. Walzer from the end of the 1970’s up to today. In the first part he analyses the normative justification of the theory of a just war and attempts to show its inner connection to a normative justification of humanitarian intervention. In the second part, he deals with Walzer’s reflections on the principles of global justice and the institutional organisation of the international community. In conclusion, he analyses Walzer’s key objections to cosmopolitanism and he poses the question of whether his normative standpoint of ‘global egalitarianism’ is consistent with the basic outcomes of his general theory of justice.
Civil society is a sphere of human relations in the area of the state that is essentially different from the state. It is open to participation on the part of free and equal citizens, who co-operate on behalf of the common good. It is a sphere of differences, divisions and conflicts, and at the same time a sphere of creating relationships between citizens. In order to ensure a good co-existence within society, tolerance is necessary. Michael Walzer, an American philosopher working on ethics, political and social philosophy, stresses that fact. This article is a reconstruction of his views on the significance of tolerance for civil society. Walzer gives several definitions of tolerance, then he describes five forms of the government of tolerance and says about three countries that do not match any of these forms. Walzer regards civil religion as especially important for the identity of civil society. He separates the sphere of the state and the sphere of political community, which is civil society in fact. He stresses pluralism as an important feature of civil society and says that tolerance is so vital because it allows citizens to co-exist peacefully in society, so they can build strong relationships and co-operate with regard to the common good.

Wyżej wspomniane kwestie zostały poddane anlizie w oparciu o trzy najważniejsze pozycje Walzera: "On toleration", "Just and Unjust War" oraz "Arguing about War".

The aim of the paper is to confront the main theses of communitarianism – perceived as a political project created primarily by such thinkers as Alasdair MacIntyre, Michael Sandel, Charles Taylor and Michael Walzer – with the basic assumptions of the classical republicanism. Communitarians – clearly inspired by the ideas of Tocqueville – opt for strengthening the community bonds at the local level. According to them, on this level, and not in the central politics, virtue is the most fully manifested as a basis for a joint action. Republicanism and communitarianism utilize also different concepts of freedom, the common feature of which is that they accentuate the positive dimension of freedom. In addition, communitarianism emphasizes the importance of competition for shaping the civic attitudes to a lesser extent than republicanism. This element – the emphasizing the role of the agon – was strongly present in the thought of Hannah Arendt, which must be considered as more republican in this respect than the proposals of communitarians. It must be noted, notwithstanding, that the topics specific to the type of public discourse developed by classical republicanism certainly occur in some concepts of Charles Taylor, Michael Walzer, and especially Michael Sandel. Sandel openly considers himself as a representative of the republican tradition, however from the rich heritage of this tradition he specifies the version which he calls the “Athenian” model and sets it against “neo-Roman” one. The latter, however, was predominant in the old tradition of republicanism.
In this paper I discuss and criticize Michael Walzer’s concept of social criticism. I detect in his project an unacknowledged attempt at the reactivation of the young-Marxian idea of criticism as a “reform of consciousness”. However, I argue, Walzer challenges one of the most prominent and controversial assumptions of the Marxian project – the existence of the universal subject of emancipation. I claim that while Walzer’s elimination of this universal claims of social criticism is an understandable and important attempt at freeing political thought from philosophical illusions, it takes away the most significant reason for social criticism − an effort of oppressed groups at emancipation from domination. I agree with Walzer’s critique of the universality of the oppressed subject at the basis of Marxian thought. However, what I find troubling in Walzer’s idea is the resulting separation of criticism and emancipation, and this separation presents an impasse that I will try to illuminate in my article.

MacIntyre states in his criticism of Winch’s Idea of Social Science… that it is impossible to criticize the practices of societies with different forms of rationality in terms of their own forms of rationality; these practices must be intelligible within our own rationality. In this way he assumes that the only possible way to criticize other cultures is a “view from outside.” Responding MacIntyre, Winch states that every criticism of other cultures requires “extending of our own ability of understanding.” This seems to suggest that the only possible criticism is the “critique of ourselves.” This paper attempts to support Winch’s position with political argumentation. It refers to the Walzer-Said debate to demonstrate that the logic of social criticism requires reference to the political dimension of domination and the associated concept of emancipation.
