Information space is a type of information environment consisting of certain content, data and messages organized in order to satisfy information needs. Human beings encounter information space both in virtual and real world. The management and retrieval of resources in information space is one of main tasks of information architects who work on making access to information sought as fast and comfortable as possible. Information architecture follows information resources. Information environments are designed with the following needs considered: buying, information seeking, communicating, finding the way, etc. In information architecture the information space is defined as a space consisting of three interacting elements: content, context and the user. The process of information space construction includes: planning, analyzing, designing, testing and improvement.

Przestrzeń informacyjna (PI) jest rodzajem środowiska informacyjnego składającego się m.in. z treści, danych i komunikatów zorganizowanych w celu zaspokojenia potrzeb informacyjnych. Ludzie stykają się z PI zarówno w świecie wirtualnym, jak i rzeczywistym. Problemami zarządzania zasobami w PI oraz ułatwianiem ich przeszukiwania zajmują się architekci informacji. Ich celem jest uczynienie dostępu do poszukiwanej informacji możliwie najszybszym i wygodnym. Architektura informacji jest wszechobecna, występuje tam, gdzie istnieją zasoby informacyjne. Środowiska informacyjne projektuje się z uwzględnieniem następujących potrzeb: kupowania, szukania informacji, komunikowania się, znajdowania drogi itp. Z punktu widzenia AI przestrzeń informacyjna definiowana jest jako przestrzeń składająca się z trzech oddziałujących na siebie elementów: treści, kontekstu i użytkownika. Proces tworzenia PI obejmuje: planowanie, analizę, projektowanie, testowanie i udoskonalenie.
