In the 19th century, the main centers of Ukrainian historical research were Lviv, ruled by the Habsburgs, and Kiev, ruled by the Romanovs. The leading Ukrainian historian (Ruthenian) in Lviv was Izydor Sharanevich (1829–1901), a professor at Lviv University from 1871 and author of the History of Rus’ Halicko-Wlodzimierska (Lviv 1863). In this work he introduced the concept of a separate region, which he called Rus’ (Ruthenia) Halicko-Wlodzimierska. According to Sharanevich from the beginning of the 12th century to the middle of the 14th century independent states existed in the area of Rus’ Halicko-Wlodzimierska. The most prominent Ukrainian historian, whose views were formed during his education at the University of Kiev, was Mykhailo Hrushevsky (1866–1934). From 1894 he was a professor at the University of Lviv. He is the author of the fundamental work The History of Ukraine-Rus’ (1–7, Lviv 1898–1909). Hrushevsky, accepting the view of Kiev, rejected the notion of the separateness of Galician-Vladimir Rus’. He claimed, that the princedoms, founded within its area in the 12th century, were marches of the Ukrainian state – the Grand Duchy of Kiev. The Principality of Galicia-Volhynia, which existed in the 13th and the first half of the 14th century, was considered a defective continuation of Ukrainian statehood formed in Kiev.

In this article the issue of establishing and in particular functioning of the Mychailo Hruszewski’s Lvov history school. Attention has been paid to its two-level structure. The significance of the scientific seminar conducted by the historian at the Lvov University has been notes as an institutional basis influencing research attitudes and creative interests of his students. Equally significant for the scientific development especially of young Ukrainian researchers were classes given in the historic-philosophical section of the Scientific Society named by Szewczenko. It has been stated that scientific-didactic activity of Hruszewski led to the preparation of young researchers of the Ukrainian science.

Szewczenki. Stwierdzono, że działalność naukowo-dydaktyczna Hruszewskiego prowadziła do przygotowania młodych badaczy ukraińskiej nauki.
