This article discusses the topic of national identification. The author's aim is to define the appropriate conceptual framework for describing nationality, while taking into account the pluralistic character of the nation and the related contextual and multi-levelled nature of national identification. In the author's view, the concept of 'identification' more accurately applies to individual nationality than the category of identity does, owing to the latter's undesirable subjectivism, methodological individualism, and its occasional references to an over-intellectualised concept of the individual. Scientists who use the second of these two terms tend, moreover, to conflate descriptions of individual and collective phenomena. In an effort to substantiate and elaborate his arguments the author draws on the 'Good Soldier Svejk' by Jaroslav Hasek and presents an analysis of the national identification of the novel's multi-national protagonists. He demonstrates that national identification is multi-levelled and variable, depending on particular situations and institutional frameworks. The author's description shows that the best method of analysing individual nationality may be by examining the individual's set of social roles and institutions rather than describing individual identifications.

The following article attempts to analyze and interpret the findings of the National Census 2002 with respect to national and ethnic minorities. Apart from a concise summary of numerical data from particular voivodships, more attention is paid to such issues as: methodological remarks regarding questions about the respondents' national identity entailed in the census and the effects of asking such questions, factors distorting one's declaration of national identity, some comments and reactions of minorities to the census results. I take a morę analytic approach towards the three biggest minorities: German, Ukraininan and Byelorussian ones. The census data provide many important data but only when we treat them as complementary information and also when the numbers are somehow considered relative to the situation of a particular minority, as well as the direction and stage of that situation's change. Thanks to the census we know much morę about national and ethnic minorities in Poland. This knowledge is, however, secondary, partial, allowing more for formulating hypotheses than firm conclusions. For example we know for sure that there exists a Silesian identification functioning as a basie ethnic identity, which cannot be narrowed to a regional identity. However, we do not know much about the further evolution of this community. Key words: national census, ethnic and national minorities, national identification.

The text comprises considerations on the changes in the national identification of Silesians after World War II. The pivotal line of argument will be based on twentieth century population statistics and corresponding politics of the German and Polish authorities. What is crucial, and what analysts fail to mention, is a constant, unaltered identification of Silesians on an ethnic level. A national identity was imposed by the policies of the countries on the territory of which Silesia was located and had a varying character. It was only in 2002 that Silesians began to term their group a nation, what caused misunderstanding and disturbance. The identification of Silesians has not changed, they just started calling their group differently. The dominant group has not yet consented to it.

The author attempts to answer the question of how the national identity of individuals is modified by migration. The fieldwork was conducted among Polish students who were living abroad to study at university. Th e author assumed, for the purposes of the research, that national identity is the self-defi nition that refers to national identifi cation and cultural valence. Based on case studies analyses, five types of modified identities were distinguished: “I” Polish – a citizen of the world; “I” a citizen of the world born in Poland; “I” Polish, a citizen of the country of residence and a citizen of the world; “I” Polish and a citizen of the country of residence; “I” a citizen of the world and/or a citizen of the country of residence.
