The article analyses underground publishing in Wrocław from 1979 to 1989 upon the basis of examples of the most prominent publishers (Kooperatywa Wydawnicza “Wyzwolenie”, Agencja Informacyjna Solidarności Walczącej/Agencja Wydawnicza Solidarności, Inicjatywa Wydawnicza Aspekt, Wydawnictwo Profil); in this way the author recreated the character of “second circulation” publishing and the way in which it functioned in that particular town. In doing so, K. Dworaczek discussed the shape of particular structures, their publishing accomplishments, the use of printing techniques, and people involved in the opposition. He also attempted to resolve the question about the extent to which the image of underground printing in Wrocław was characteristic for a similar sized town and to which its features included a distinctive specificity. The analysis is divided into two fundamental parts: the first encompasses a period to 1980, i.e. the activity of the so-called pre-August opposition (prior to the establishment of the “Solidarity” trade union), while the second is about the years 1982–1989, i.e. the period of the underground ”Solidarity”.
W artykule przedstawiono działalność największego w powojennej historii Polski wydawnictwa prasowego, jakim była RSW „Prasa–Książka–Ruch” w okresie politycznego przełomu lat 1980–1981. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na relacje spółdzielni prasowej z jej politycznym dysponentem, jakim były centralne władze PZPR, a w nich tzw. pion nadzoru propagandowego.

In the history of Poland and the Catholic Church in the Homeland there is no lack of heroic witnesses, whose attitude, words and testimony has become a certain “sign of” a given historical period. Undoubtedly, such a character is Bl. Rev. Jerzy Popieluszko, whose teaching and famous “Mass. For the Homeland” – became a symbol of the end of the twentieth century in Poland. With these services, there was a certain custom of plastic decoration that decorated the chancel of the church of St. Stanislaw Kostka during each “Mass for Homeland”. They expressed the thematic content of the given service in a plastic form, thus constituting a patriotic-national-religious message. There were prevailing historical themes referring to the events at that time and the religious elements. The article presents chosen plastic decorations, also referring to the sermons of the “Zoliborz priest”. The analysis and presentation of works of art is possible thanks to archival collections of the Center for Documentation of the Life and Cult of Bl. Rev. Jerzy Popieluszko.

Ks. Jerzego Popiełuszki.
After signing of the August – September Agreements in 1980, the Polish authorities obligated to legal sanction of them. Serious changes were required in the current, very laconic Trade Unions Act from 1st July 1949. That act did not enable to found an independent trade union in a communistic state. The crucial aim of this article is to define the essential contribution of The Independent Self-governing Labour Union “Solidarity” in assumptions of the act, a description of course and atmosphere of works over its project and the final result of those efforts. On 23rd September 1980 The Council of Polish People’s Republic founded a special team for preparing a draft legislation of Trade Unions. The delegation of The Independent Self-Governing Labour Union “Solidarity” (in Polish NSZZ “Solidarność”) was invited to work on that draft. From 17th October 1980 to 26th April 1981 the team had eight plenary sessions. As a result of those sessions, a complete draft of the Act should have Republic. During those meetings discussions were held on various issues such as: a registration of trade unions, compliance of activities of trade unions with The Polish People’s Republic Constitution and Convention No 87 of International Labour Organization, the agricultural self-government, self-employed professionals, students’ and farmers’ trade unions. What is more a right to strike, acceptable kinds of strikes, payment for a protest, legitimacy of founding workers’ councils, a conception of collective labour agreement for joint professions and a problem of social agreements in workplaces were being widely discussed. Thanks to the participation of “Solidarność” delegation, the prepared draft had a lot of modern solutions. The Council of Polish People’s Republic did not accept a few of them and introduced changes that limited possibility of founding trade unions and organization of strike for a lot of professions. Trade Unions Act was adopted neither at that time nor before 13th December 1981 when martial law in Poland was imposed. It happened upon 8th October 1982. The new act outlawed The Independent Self-governing Labour Union “Solidarity”. On the other hand, only thanks to foundation of “Solidarity” a provision about right to strike was included in that act that was not in the act from 1949.
Artykuł omawia, w jaki sposób owa nisza niezależności została wykorzystana przez środowisko akademickie w latach 1966-1989 do działań opozycyjnych i postaw oporu.

The article briefly describes the aims of Research Centre for Eastern Europe / Forschungsstelle Osteuropa. It was first founded in May 1982 as „The Research Centre for Independent Literature and Social Movements in Eastern Europe at the University of Bremen”. The chief reason for the establishment of the Centre was the proclamation of martial law in Poland. The original idea stemmed from the Czech dissidents, who believed that research institutes should be established to work on the countries within the Soviet sphere of influence, without putting emphasis on the nature of the party and state. The Centre began its work by collecting material on „Samizdat”, testimonies of the political opposition, religious conflicts, and artistic dissent after 1945/53. The Polish collection contains a comprehensive set of volumes of „Second Circulation“,1976-1989/90. There are textual materials: journals of trade union, and „Solidarność“ movement, books published in underground, documents and leaflets, indipendent mail, posters, and audio-visual materials. The Bremer archive owes its success thanks to the participation of emigrants. Their private collections today are particularly important, and unique in their character. Examples for cataloging and archival description are cited.

Artykuł zawiera zarys historii Instytutu Badań Europy Wschodniej przy Uniwersytecie Bremeńskim i charakterystykę jego zbiorów. Placówka została założona w maju 1982 r. pod nazwą Centrum Badawcze Literatury Niezależnej i Ruchów Społecznych w Europie Wschodniej. Pomysłodawcami jej powołania byli czescy dysydenci, którzy zwracali uwagę niemieckim politykom i opinii publicznej na działalność ruchów społecznych i rozwój kultury niezależnej w krajach byłego bloku wschodniego, a przede wszyst kim – na konieczność ich badania i gromadzenia źródeł na ten temat. Instytut w Bremie łączył te dwa zadania od początku swej działalności, zbierając literaturę samizdatu i inne źródła do badań nad opozycją polityczną i kulturą niezależną w krajach tzw. demokracji ludowej. Kolekcje polskich publikacji tzw. drugiego obiegu wydawniczego z lat 1976-1989/90, wciąż kompletowane, obejmują dzisiaj druki zwarte, periodyki, pocztę niezależną, ulotki, plakaty oraz nagrania audio i audiowizualne.
The article’s author has decided to present Primate Stefan Wyszyński’s attitude towards the threat of Soviet military intervention in Poland in 1980–1981, and to indicate implications of his opinions and ideas. According to Cardinal Wyszyński, the risk of Soviet military invasion of Poland in the analysed period was serious and could produce unforeseen results. His opinion on the question had a bearing on his opinions that it was necessary for the Polish United Workers’ Party to exist within the system of “people’s” Poland, his distance to a political sphere of activity of the “Solidarity”, and a negative attitude towards operations of the Workers’ Defence Committee.
Following the imposition of martial law, an operational unit was established within the Ministry of the Interior to act as a team to coordinate activities undertaken against the underground Solidarity movement and other illegal groups. The Study Office of the Security Service of the Ministry of the Interior was established in March 1982 and became operational in the summer of 1982. It was given special prerogatives and could supervise the activities of other Security Service units as well as assist them in planning and carrying out their tasks. Its officers were also involved in uncovering anti-system circles. The available literature and documents show that they led complex games and operational combinations that even included the establishment of controlled underground organisations. This article outlines the circumstances surrounding the establishment of this office, its internal organisation and its basic tasks. The chronology of the establishment of its field cells, for instance the inspectorates No. 2 of the Provincial Offices of the Interior of the Security Service, is also described.
