Aim/purpose – The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of structural changes taking place in the Polish economy on the share of labour in national income. Design/methodology/approach – The scope of this study includes a review of the literature dedicated to the issue and an empirical analysis of data available on this topic. The study uses elements of descriptive statistics and the method of induction. Findings – The conducted analysis shows that in the years 2005-2016, a relation contrary to that reported by de Serres, Scarpetta, & de la Maisonneuve (2002), concerning shifts of employee groups between sectors of the national economy, prevailed in Poland. No research results on the impact of the decrease in the share of self-employed on the decrease in the share of labour in the national income have been confirmed. At the same time, the effect of changes in the relation between employee remuneration and the added value, resulting from their transition between sectors of the national economy, was positively verified. Research implications/limitations – The results related to changes in the share of self- -employed in the national economy should be treated with caution, as there are also economically inactive entities listed in the Central Statistical Office (GUS) register. Originality/value/contribution – To date, in Poland comprehensive research into the influence of structural changes on the share of labour in national income has not been conducted.

Understanding the nature of the national economy is important due to the various types of internal and external turbulence that this economy is subject to. Microentities and macro-entities cooperate and compete in this economy. They operate in an external environment, closer and further of a very different nature (institutional, legal, cultural, etc.). Relations between elements of the national economy, ie between entities, legal, political and social infrastructure, generate feedback that requires scientific research to ensure the economy national undisturbed functioning. The author of the article puts forward a research hypothesis that this is possible because the national economy is a structural entity, subject to structural analysis, as chemists do, researching various kinds of chemical compounds.

This paper presents problems of the construction of econometric models (MES-1 and MGS) in the Polish economy. These models were constructed in the 80's by a team led by Professor Kolonko. Model of the Polish economy - MES - 1 covered areas of: employment, production, national income, public money fund, consumption and foreign trade. The main object of this model was prediction. This model had a high compliance measured by determination ratio. Estimated prognosis had relatively high accuracy. To estimate the predictive accuracy of the model measures ex-ante and ex-post were used. MGS model was used to the simulation analysis. The transition to a market economy and changes in the economic system in the early 90's led to abandonment of further work on the use of constructed models.

The first period of transformation of the Polish economy was based on liberal concepts. It was characterized by insufficient state’s interest of the port sector development. Port’s infrastructure has been recapitalization and the process of adjustment of organizational area did not follow on transformation of economy. An improvement in the functioning of the port sector in Poland should be achieved through an increased engagement of the state in the process of modernizing the seaports. It should consider the possibility of extending the scope of the activities of the management ports.

The competitive position of the economy is an important aspect of her perception from the perspective of investors. At the same time an increasing importance is being paid to the implementation of sustainable development (SD) as a response to the ongoing process of imbalance observed in the modern world economy. The analysis proves the lack of contradiction between the achievement of the goals of SD, understood as the attainment of desired levels of SD indicators and the competitive position of EU economies. It can also be concluded about the positive effects of the implementation of the SD on the achievement of a high competitive position, which in the long run should help reducing the scale of threats to the SD of the world economy.

The paper focuses on the sectoral disparities of the link between changes in labour productivity and employment changes. It presents tendencies and features of the labour productivity dynamics in three sectors of the polish economy. The purpose of this article is to compare the factors affecting the level and growth of wages in Poland and Germany. The study is covering the period of 1997-2010 years. Based on macroeconomic data originating from statistical offices, may have been built econometric models of cause and effect. Main hypothesis states that the factors affecting the level and growth of wages in Poland and Germany are similar. In order to verify the hypothesis, in econometric models as exogenous variables an average price level, an average work output, an unemployment rate and seasonal elements were accepted. The dependent variable is the average level of nominal wages in Poland and Germany. As a result of models satisfactory results, partly proving the constructed hypothesis were received.

The paper aims to discuss the changes in Poland's foreign trade with Germany between 1995 and 2010. It also attempts to analyze the level of import penetration rate of the Polish market by German goods. The data quoted in the paper indicate that Germany are our main supplier of the commodities. In researched period, share of this country in Polish imports and exports maintains at the similar level 25-30%. Generally, about 11% Poland's total demand for the industrial products in 2010 was supplied with commodities imported from Germany. The most important goods imported from this country are: transport equipment, machinery, chemicals, basic metals and fabricated metal products. Also the import penetration rate is the highest for these groups of products (transport equipment - 24,5%, machinery - 18,5%, chemicals - 20,1%).The high import penetration rate seems to be correlated with the share of a particular commodity group in imports from Germany. Value of this rate can be in 64% explained by the share of the commodity group in the Poland's imports from the researched country.

The article analyzes the position and the positioning strategy of East Central Europe in the so-called “first globalization (1850-1914)”. The focus is on foreign trade and the transfer of the two most important production factors, i.e. capital and labor. East Central Europe included in this period the territories of the Habsburg Monarchy, the Kingdom of Poland as a part of the Russian Empire, and the eastern provinces of the Kingdom of Prussia which were from 1871 onwards part of the German Reich. The article combines the theories and methods of economic history and transnational history. It sees itself as a contribution to a trans-regional history of East Central Europe by analyzing first the main “flows” and then the influence of “controls”.
