Dicționar grotesc

A little writing not enough researched and reaching a few pages belonging to Vasile Alecsandri proves the keen interest of a comedies and vaudeville author for language issues, especially for the building of a beautiful and fluent literary language. From our point of view, of a today's researcher, it is the only work published towards the end of the 19th century (approx. 1876), which includes in the title the term of grotesque with certain connotations, unusual for the Romanian cultural space. Through an analysis sourcing in the New Criticism, we will show the links, avant la lettre, with the aesthetics of the grotesque in the Romanian space and the intuitions of a writer, considered “easy”, although a classic of Romanian literature.

The author proposes a reflection on discovering the poet with regard to his creation or construction. This issue is discussed on the example of Emily Dickinson’s works which were published only after her death and were not prepared for print by the author herself. In the light of the latest research on the material dimension of her legacy (starting from Virginia Jackson’s study Dickinson’s Misery: A Theory of Lyric Reading from 2005 to the recently published collection The Gorgeous Nothings. Emily Dickinson’s Envelope Poems), it appears that many of Dickinson’s works were not written in a form that could be recognized as poetic at first glance. A large part was preserved only in notebooks, loose sheets covered with handwriting written in continuo or at odd angles, in a manner adapted to the format of a given scrap of paper, usually a free fragment of a recycled envelope or a torn-off corner of a piece of paper used previously for a different purpose. These texts had to be recognized then by discoverers as poems, and then copied and edited in a way consistent with what was considered lyric poetry in the era. Some of them were then rejected as not falling into the category of poetry and included in the opus of the American only by later researchers. Others, in the first editions treated as poems with time were excluded by historians of literature from this collection. Contrary to the provocative title, the aim of the article is not to answer the question about the status of the texts left by Dickinson. Instead, the author reflects on the poetic criteria ascribed to her works by the first and subsequent readers.

The paper investigates the extent to which Stanley Fish’s constructivism and E. D. Hirsch’s hermeneutics are similar in their assumptions and program. Although it is commonly accepted that they constitute polar opposites of literary theory, Fish and Hirsch are embedded in the theoretical discourse of New Criticism’s approach to literary studies and develop in a form of critique of the formalist stance. The problems they encounter and the way they approach literary texts are shaped by formalist assumptions that eventually lead to serious discrepancies between their postulated theory and practice. Both theories of interpretation seem to be operating within a similar framework of ideas which determines their understanding of the problems regarding literary studies as well as their solutions. What appears to be even more important is that the ‘‘textual” theoretical framework itself causes serious problems for both programmes of literary hermeneutics.

Tomasz Cieślak-SokołowskiDepartment of Contemporary CriticismFaculty of PolishJagiellonian University The Return of Close Reading in Contemporary Interpretations of 20th Century LiteraturesAbstract  The present article offers an insight into contemporary discussions concerning the category of close reading. It is in such a context that the author is able to shed light upon the special status of such forms of contemporary literary criticism that do not attempt to change paradigms, but rather are organized by gestures of corrections and reconfiguration. Postulating the “return of close reading,” the author departs from the basic tenets of New Criticism to illustrate some of the more recent concepts of what close reading is today and how they affect the interpretation of contemporary works of literature and, by extension, texts of culture. Keywords: close reading, New Criticism, interpretation, 20th century literature Powroty do close reading we współczesnych lekturach literatury XX wieku  Streszczenie Artykuł skupia się na próbie opisania współczesnych dyskusji na temat kategorii close reading. Jednocześnie autor tekstu zwraca uwagę na szczególny status współczesnych badań literackich, którym nie tyle zależy na zmianach paradygmatów, ile dynamice rewizyjnych korekt, przesunięć i rekonfiguracji. Słowa kluczowe: close reading, Nowa Krytyka, interpretacja, literatura XX wieku.

The quarterly “Tematy”, edited by Paweł Mayewski, was published in the years 1961–1969. In 32 issues the editors published reprints of essayistic texts from elite American magazines, presenting works in the field of sociology, political science and literary criticism. There were also many translations poems of the greatest contemporary American poets. The eminent professors of American universities, as well as many Polish emigre writers, cooperated with Mayewski. Those appeared mainly in the role of translators. Mayewski’s magazine was part of the ideological offensive against communism and the place of presentation of the complex image of American society in the times of the Black people’s struggle for equality, student rebellion against the establishment, counterculture successes and at the same time the triumph of the consumerist model of society. All these issues as well as disputes among American intellectuals about the place of literature in the modern society found expression in the Mayewski’s quaterly. The sixties were a period of exhaustion of the potential of the New Critics’ school and the search for new ways of interpreting literary works. Also in this dimension, the quarterly addressed to the Polish reader has become a place for the presentation of new ideas.
