In 2019, the canonisation of John Henry Newman – an Anglican clergyman, an English thinker, a convert to Catholicism and a cardinal – took place. This article is an attempt to present selected ecclesiological themes in the thought of the new saint of the Catholic Church. It was also necessary to ask a question about the validity of ecclesiological diagnoses for contemporary Christianity.

The main goal of this article is to show how John Henry Newman’s Mariology and thought on Blessed Mary penetrated into the Mariology of the Second Vatican Council. To begin with, the author outlines the context of Newman’s theological activity as well as the context of the last Council. Subsequently, selected aspects of Newman’s mariological reflection are discussed as they emerge in the conciliar documents. The author then advances a theological assessment of Newman’s conceptions which found their way into the documents of the council.

The article analyzes the dispute between Étienne Gilson and Maurice Blondel. Their dispute is quite notorious and, even though all the reasons behind it are unknown, casts a shadow on the French philosophy of Christian inspiration in the last century. For both Gilson and Blondel are among the most illustrious representatives of it. The article attempts to reconcile Gilson and Blondel by referring to John Henry Newman. According to Henri de Lubac, “Blondel greatly admired Newman and, in that, Gilson joined him;” moreover, St. John Paul II, in Fides et Ratio, not only proposed the names of Newman and Gilson among the five thinkers of Western thought that he considered to be significant examples of “fruitful relationship between philosophy and the word of God” in their “courageous research,” but he also, considered their “philosophical works of great influence and lasting value.” The former Pope stated, “a philosophy which, starting with an analysis of immanence, opened the way to the transcendent,” just after devoting two paragraphs to praise the modern Thomistic revival and its fruits (§57–58). Could, then, blessed John Henry Newman be a possible tertium datum between Gilson and Blondel?

As the Church follows the call of John Paul II for a New Evangelization, she must consider how the individual person actually comes to belief. Bl. John Henry Newman, soon to be canonized, addressed this question in An Essay in Aid of A Grammar of Assent. According to Newman, religious belief is not just a logical acceptance of intellectual propositions. It is a commitment of the whole person to God, according to the image of God formed in the person’s imagination. (The imagination is that faculty possessed by every human person, which coordinates real life experiences and allows the person to comprehend the real world around him).It is by intentionally employing the imagination, rather than demonstrative logic, that the human person arrives at a belief that is well-grounded, neither cold nor fanatical. Accordingly, our evangelical activity, while never neglecting the truth of the Gospel, should seek to engage the senses and feelings of the human person and not merely the intellect.

Tworzył swoje dzieła, należąc do tych dwóch konfesji.

This essay inquires into the unique intersection of Erich Przywara and John Henry Newman and explores the re-imagined notions of divine transcendence and the supernatural in their works. Przywara found in Newman a source of inspiration for a more lively presentation of Catholic thought and a model for illuminating the path toward a new Catholic intellectual culture. Newman’s work highlights the actively inquiring disposition of faith, an active search for the meaning of its doctrines, a progressive and unceasing journey that comprises the entirety of one’s life. By showing the changing Catholic responses to modernity and the evolving theological approaches that would come to characterize later twentieth-century Catholic thought, the paper emphasizes how Przywara and Newman contributed to a more vibrant form of Catholicism and a renewal of Catholic intellectual culture that anticipated the Church’s wider opening to the world.

This text focuses on the prominent Victorian figure, John Henry Newman (1801–1890), and how he responded to his ethos. It is assumed here that each person grows in confrontation with his or her place. The place in which we live, our genius loci, exerts some influence on our decisions. The most important thing is to find out what kind system is thus established. This system may be true or false. Newman valued highly his family home, his university friendships, and the Church as his ultimate destination. He was born in the Anglican Church at the time when the Anglican milieu was particularly hostile towards the Roman Catholics. His personal history is so fascinating because despite the surrounding hostilities, he managed to re-evaluate his life.

This paper seeks to depict the dynamic nature of the acting person. The point of reference for my analysis is John Henry Newman’s philosophical and theological remarks and Graham Greene’s literary world. Both Newman and Greene defend man’s responsibility and freedom. These areas are threatened because actions are always committed under certain circumstances, therefore there is a temptation to flee from responsibility and freedom by blaming the circumstances. This kind of conduct is typical of inauthentic individuals. There are different experiences and emotional moods that may lead man astray in his evaluation of conduct: pity, pride, and laziness. Eventually, this text argues that responsibility in its most profound meaning does not respond to a given situation, but is an attempt to restore order in reality.
