W latach 1989-2015, a więc od początku okresu transformacji społeczno- -gospodarczej, liczebność zbioru miast polskich i węgierskich zmieniała się prawie corocznie. W omawianym okresie liczba miast w Polsce wzrosła z 822 do 915, czyli o 11%, a na Węgrzech aż o 211%, tj. ze 162 do 343. Głównym celem pracy jest opis zróżnicowania poziomu rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego nowych miast w Polsce i na Węgrzech. Do podstawowych etapów postępowania badawczego należą: 1) ogólna charakterystyka procesu umiastowienia i zbioru nowych miast w Polsce i na Węgrzech, 2) wskazanie podobieństw i różnic w poziomie rozwoju nowych miast, 3) klasyfikacja nowych miast ze względu na poziom rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego.

In the years 1989-2015, i.e. since the start of the socio-economic transformation, the size of the set of Polish and Hungarian towns kept changing almost from year to year. In that period the number of towns in Poland grew from 822 to 915, i.e. by 11%, and in Hungary by as much as 211%, from 162 to 343. The chief goal of this paper is to describe differences in the level of socio-economic development of those new towns in Poland and Hungary. The basic steps in the research procedure will include: (1) a general characterization of the process of an increase in the number of towns and of the sets of new towns in Poland and Hungary; (2) an identification of similarities and differences in the level of development of those new towns, and (3) a classification of the new towns in terms of the level of their socio-economic development.
