This article deals with the early phase in the career of Wladyslw Ogrodzinski, writer and fledgling historian. From his Cracow base - he nad a research job at the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU) - he made frequent journalistic forays into PoIand's Western and Northem Territories, and especially to the 'Warmia and Mazury'. He formed close emotiona! ties with the latter region, explored its past and the customs and lives of the indigenous people. In his contacts with the population of 'Warmia and Mazury' he was often confronted with institutional prejudice and injustice. Ogrodzinski documented the ill-treatment of the indigenous population by settlers from Eastern and Central Poland and appealed to the authorities to put an end to these abuses. The source materials used by the authoress of this article include Ogrodzinski's own texts (both those that appeared in print and those that were held up by the Censor's Office), official correspondence and private letters. The gaps in the sources have been filled in by excerpts from interviews with W. Ogrodzinski.
