The article attempts to assess the state of the Polish pension system after its functioning for over 8 years. The role and potential of pension funds were analysed in the Polish financial system. The effectiveness of investment policy carried out by funds has been assessed. The answer is given to the question whether open pension funds realise their tasks in the appropriate way and what are the results of the pension system reform in Poland. ,

The article is an attempt of summary of Open Pension Funds (OFE) activity made on the basis of data published by Financial Supervision Comission (KNF) from 1999 to 2006. The analysis concerns four aspects of retirement insurance in the second pillar: number of members, scale of assets, investments and the level of rates of return. The author made an effort to show the most important conclusions concerning the future OFE activity on the basis of previous results.

The purpose of the submitted article is to underline the necessity of introducing national insurance system reform in Poland. As a result of the reform, there are financial institutions which participate in the so called 2nd and 3rd insurance pillars. The reform imposes some tasks concerning investment policy. There is an analysis of the influence of the reform on the development of financial investors in Poland, with special attention paid to investment funds and open pension funds. ·
