This paper introduces a newly begun research project conducted by the Silesian Regional Musem (Slezské zemské muzeum) in Opava which aims to thoroughly document folk architecture in the regions affected by coal-mining and industrial activities, i.e. the region around the cities of Karviná and Ostrava in Czech Silesia. Field research and the concurrent archival research will focus on previously undescribed log houses, some of which are currently under threat. The methodology used in this project and described in this paper is based on previous research conducted in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, with special focus on interdisciplinary cooperation.

The article aims at interpretation of cultural-philosophical tendencies related to the changes in the structures of experience of the (post)industrial landscape of Ostrava in the period 1989 – 2023. In the theoretical part, the notion of the “structure of experience” as a basic category of the contextual approach to culture is discussed, thus emphasising the historical and ideological conditionality of literature as a contemporary record of the lived experience of a particular community. It draws on a structural-analytic approach in which the structure of experience represents a complex arrangement of patterns, principles, and strategies that appear in various modifications as the predominant features of human thought and experience. The contextual analysis reflects on Ostrava’s (post)industrial landscape with regard to ongoing deindustrialisation and traces how global socio-economic transformations and changes in the dominant structures of experience (of postmodernism and meta-modernism) manifest themselves at the empirical and symbolic levels. Using selected examples of representatives of the older and younger generations of Ostrava poets who experienced/are experiencing the (post)industrial landscape at one time or another, it describes specific manifestations of postmodern and then meta-modern structures of experience.

This study is an expanded text of the opening address to the 10th Congress of Czech Historians held in Ostrava in September 2011. The author, as a?long-term Committee member of the Association of Historians (since 1992) and the Association?s Chairman in the years 2005?2011, aims to present a?retrospective analysis of the relationship between the social development in the Czech Republic after 1989 and the preparation and the course of four nationwide Congresses of Historians which took place between 1993?2011. He objectively records documented differences during the organisational preparation of the individual congresses and their programme contents, in addition to listing a?number of important factual connections which, one would, potentially, be unable to reconstruct from preserved documents in the future. In his conclusion he contemplates the results of the latest Ostrava Congress in September 2011, at which, also based on their expertise, Czech historians identified tangible expressions of a?social crisis, manifesting themselves in a?form of radicalization of Czech society, amongst other things.
