Review of a book which is one of few publications on the use of Open Source software. The publication is aimed primarily at librarians and those interested in implementation of new technologies in libraries. However, some of the information contained in the articles is more general so it can be used in other areas of human activity.

Open educational resources in e-learning are the future source of information for lifelong learners. Open source and open standards are defined as the basis of the "Open educational resource movement" that is beginning to form on a global level in the last decade. The characteristics of the OS are investigated in the relation to e-Learning, existing and new pedagogical principles and copyright issues. Several good practices, ideas and existing initiatives are presented and the vision of the future of open educational resources is introduced.

W artykule podjęto próbę określenia, jakimi powodami kierują się użytkownicy podczas wyboru oprogramowania Open Source. Wykorzystano analizę korespondencji, aby zbadać zależność pomiędzy używaniem programów z wybranych grup oprogramowania a deklarowanymi powodami ich wykorzystania zgodnymi z wymienianymi w literaturze. Dla porównania wyników z dostępną literaturą zastosowano również podział powodów zgodny z teorią Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Otrzymane wyniki potwierdziły, że użytkownicy podczas wyboru oprogramowania nie kierują się jedynie niskim kosztem programów objętych licencją Open Source, a deklarowane powody korzystania mogą różnić się w zależności od grupy oprogramowania.

Why do users choose Open Source software? Analysis of the network effect

This article analyses the phenomenon of using the Open Source software. The aim is to investigate and verify the existence of a positive direct network effect that characterizes usage of the Open Source software. The multivariate probit model is applied to extract factors motivating end users to the usage of the Open Source software. Special attention is paid to the demographic characteristics of the end users, as well as to the impact of the end users’ peers, such as family, work and school, on using the Open Source software. The results confirm the research assumptions. It is found that the actual choice of various Open Source software groups is correlated and thus cannot be analyzed separately. This supports the hypothesis about the existence of the network effect derived from the complementary services and dependencies among applications. The obtained results are representative for the Polish population aged 13-54.

In the article the authors made an attempt to consider the possibility of choosing and implementing Open Source Business Intelligence platform instead of the proprietary system, like Oracle’s, Microsoft’s, IBM or SAP’s one. A brief characteristic of Business Intelligence systems was introduced and the creation and evolution of Open Source Business Intelligence were described. The advantages and disadvantages of those systems were also examined. An exemplary SWOT analysis that can be helpful while choosing Business Intelligence system was carried out.

Obecnie w celu efektywnego zarządzania informacją biblioteki sięgają po systemy klasy Enterprise Content Management. Jednakże przejście na nieużyteczny bądź wadliwy system portalowy lub przyjęcie niepraktycznych koncepcji może pociągnąć za sobą poważne konsekwencje. Przykład stanowi otwartoźródłowy system Liferay Portal, który został wdrożony w Bibliotece Uniwersyteckiej w Toruniu w 2013 r. W tym przypadku, po trzech latach użytkowania, wymagana była migracja do nowszej, pozbawionej błędów wersji. W związku z tym autorzy omówili migrację społecznościowej wersji systemu Liferay Portal 6.0.2 do stabilnego i dojrzałego wydania 6.2.5. W niniejszym artykule została podjęta próba uporządkowania czynności, które zostały wykonane podczas prowadzonych prac związanych z migracją, a także wskazania na liczne problemy, które zostały rozwiązane. Intencją artykułu jest także ukazanie możliwości, jakie oferuje platforma Liferay Portal pod kątem tworzenia bibliotecznego intranetu społecznościowego. Migracja platformy zakończyła się powodzeniem i była pożyteczna dla różnych grup użytkowników korzystających z jej usług.

Nowadays, for effective information management, libraries are referred to Enterprise Content Management systems. However, switching to a useless or faulty portal system or adopting impractical concepts can have serious consequences. The example is the open source Liferay Portal system, which was implemented at the University Library in Toruń in 2013. In this case, after three years of use, migration was required to a newer, error-free version. Accordingly, the authors discussed the migration of the community version of Liferay Portal 6.0.2 to a stable and mature release of 6.2.5. This article attempts to organize the work that was done during the migration work, as well as to indicate the number of problems that have been resolved. The intent of this article is also to highlight the opportunities offered by the Liferay Portal platform for building a library intranet. Platform migration has been successful and has benefited the various user groups that use it.
