It is argued here that a remarkable passage from Romain Rolland's 'Colas Breugnon' on the pleasure of reading has twice become a model for Jan Parandowski (1895-1978). He imitated its style and followed its structure in his 1922 review of Rolland's novel, and again in his 1925 introductory essay to Apuleius' 'Golden Ass'. Such observation proves once more Parandowski's reverence for the French novelist, and offers a glimpse into the conspicuous literary technique of one of the finest connoisseurs of ancient culture amongst Polish twentieth-century writers.
