This article focuses on the situation of parents of children aged 0-7 in the Czech labour market according to findings from the Labour Force Survey in 2007. The author discusses the model of changes to the economic position of parents typical for the Czech Republic and shows that mainly mothers are affected by the interruption to labour market participation. They found a strong homogeneity of preferences for home care until a child reaches the age of 3, a fact that could also be influenced by structural/institutional conditions. Working mothers of smaller children are significantly at risk of unemployment and at risk of being required to work on a fixed-term contract, and they have a smaller chance of reaching management positions. Fathers are not affected as much by parenthood, but they are more at risk of having to working long hours and evenings. Some of the results (especially on mothers' unemployment) require further research and political attention.

The relationship between parental smoking and adolescent smoking behaviour has been well documented in previous studies. Less is known, however, about possible moderators of such relationship. The present study focuses on the relationship between parental smoking and adolescent smoking experience in early adolescence. This period has been so far neglected in research. Further, we study parental education level as possible moderator of this relationship. Questionnaire data were collected among 1098 early adolescents (mean age 11.5 years; 54% girls). Logistic regression analyses revealed following results: (1) maternal and paternal smoking is associated with early adolescents smoking experience; (2) moderating effect of parental education was found in sense that having smoking mother with higher education increased the probability of smoking, while having smoking father with lower education increased the probability of smoking. Results are further discussed.

One of the most common factors underlying delaying or refusing childhood vaccination is concerned about vaccine safety. Parents often struggle with conflicting information about their adverse effects, vaccine-preventable diseases, and also with emotions such as fear or distress. Paediatricians are in a privileged position to facilitate parental decision-making related to vaccination, but can also tip hesitant parents towards vaccine refusal, especially if they do not communicate effectively. This qualitative study explores the decision-making processes of Slovak paediatricians in choosing communication strategies facilitating parental decisions about vaccination. We conducted literature search to identify recommendations about effective and ineffective communication strategies related to childhood vaccination, as well as in-depth interviews with 15 paediatricians. The results show that paediatricians typically lack formal training in communication with parents, but use a large number of effective communicative strategies that they have acquired during their clinical experience. However, often these decisions are not being made explicitly, and some paediatricians struggle with specific situations and types of parents. We conclude that implementing formal communication training in relation to childhood vaccination would make paediatricians’ daily work more efficient and less emotionally taxing.

Family is a foundation of social and ecclesial life. So that’s why it is necessary to undertake activities for reinforcement of this basic community. This article shows that supporting of modern family begins from the parent’s education regarding their duties result from conception and giving birth, and then through pointing them out these areas of bringing up they should realize with regard to their children.

(Polish title: Stres rodzicielski i percepcja doswiadczen zwiazanych z opieka nad dzieckiem u rodziców dzieci z autyzmem uczestniczacych w róznych formach terapii). Parents of children with autism face a number of problems related to their children's specific developmental disabilities. A significant factor affecting the scope and severity of the parents' difficulties is availability of professional help for their children. So far we have limited knowledge of the relationship between the type of therapeutic intervention provided for the child and the level of parental stress and parents' perception of their parenting experiences. The purpose of the present study was to compare two groups of parents of autistic preschool children: those receiving regular, intensive behavioral therapy delivered at a therapy centre, and those using eclectic consultative-internet therapy. The comparison included parental stress profile and positive perception of parenting experience. The study also included parents of typically developing children. The comparisons revealed a number of differences between the parents of autistic children and the parents of typically developing children, as well as some differences between the stress profiles in the two groups of parents of autistic children. In addition, a positive perception of parenting experience was shown to be a viable predictor of parental stress.

The main aim of the study was to examine a potential moderator role of social context in which children are exposed to media (alone, with peers, with parents) in the relationship between the frequency of media use and the frequency of committed peer aggression. The study included 880 elementary school students, which completed the following self-assessment measures: Peer violence among school children questionnaire (Velki, Kuterovac Jagodić, & Vrdoljak, 2012), and Exposure to the media scale (Velki & Kuterovac Jagodić, 2012). A moderation effect of parental and peer social context was found; e.g., social context had a positive effect on decreasing the correlation between watching TV and electronic peer aggression. Peers social context during playing computer games was associated with decrease in physical peer aggression. Browsing the Internet with parents or peers also decreased physical and/or electronic peer aggression. The importance of social context as a protective factor is highlighted in the discussion.

It is always a challenge to involve parents in child-development research, and there are a number of reasons why parents do not participate in such research. These include: inadequate invitations to take part, lack of time or long-term absence of the parent, the character of the study, problem behaviour occurring in the family, and parental involvement in the child´s life. In many “family studies”, it is often the case that only the mothers’ opinions are represented, and, in fact, the need to recruit fathers in research has subsequently increased in recent years, as it can present different views to those only including mothers. The aim of this study was to uncover the above differences with respect to (1) socio-demographic indicators; such as gender and the financial situation of the family, (2) health-risk behaviour (alcohol use, smoking, drunkenness) and problem behaviour, (3) parental processes (parental disclosure, solicitation, knowledge, monitoring/rules-setting) and parent-child relationships (companionship, conflict, intimate disclosure, affection, reassurance of worth, satisfaction, antagonism, punishment and relative power). This research also aims to identify what might increase the probability of parental participation in child development research.

The aim of this study was to analyse the frequency and intensity of contact between parents and their adult children in the Czech Republic. Using data from the Life Roles survey collected in 2014 we first focused on the effects of selected characteristics of parents and offspring. Next, we added residential distance, trying to see whether it can account for the effect of some of these predictors. The results show that the odds of frequent contact were higher among mothers and when the child in question was a daughter; and lower among divorced and higher educated parents. Mothers also spent more time per week on average with their child than fathers. In addition, contact was more intensive with daughters, but less intensive if the parent was working, and if the child was married. Contact frequency and intensity were also negatively affected by the age of the youngest grandchild. Distance had a strong negative effect on both dependent variables, but mostly accounted for the effect of age on frequency of contact, and some of the effect of child’s marital status on contact intensity.

Asymmetry present in every upbringing becomes very specific when it comes to religious upbringing where openness of the one being brought up to the supernatural is an added value. Specificity of this educational factor makes it that forming religious attitudes is often nonschematic and lots of elements of educational situation have an impact on its effects. The article tries to find an answer to a question about the possibility of moving the boundary of educational influence towards a child’s side. In spite of the fact that conclusions cannot support the thesis that in the strict sense a little child brings up one’s parents, a different than a traditional look at asymmetry of upbringing in family makes it possible to pay attention to an enormous role a child plays in the life of a family.

The current study had two aims: 1) to explore the effects of contextual goals, defined as perceived parents' and teachers’ goals, and classroom goal structures, on high school students’ personal achievement goal orientations and 2) to examine the effects of personal and perceived contextual goals on reading and learning strategies, and self-handicapping behaviour, as well as their effect on academic achievement. High school students (n = 403) completed questionnaires assessing goal orientations and strategies. Their GPA at the end of the school year was also recorded. The results of the study showed that perceived contextual goals were significant predictors of students’ corresponding personal goal orientations, although the results were not clear cut. Perceived contextual performance goals also predicted students’ work-avoidance goal orientation and self-handicapping behaviour that was related to lower academic achievement. On the other hand, contextual mastery goals, especially parents’ mastery goals, had significant effects on employment of deep learning and reading strategies.

The habilitation lecture deals with issues of the search of the boundaries between privacy of family and the interest of the state in proper education of children. It is very topical issue, because terms such as juvenile justice or forced adoptions of children reverberate throughout Europe and even have been covered by the Resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Its adoption was the result of the disputable practice, in particular of English court. But also parents – foreigners in Switzerland, Portugal, Italy, Croatia or Germany encounter the same problems. The forceful withdrawal of children from their biological families is a contrary to the right to family life and privacy. It is also in contradiction with the positive commitment of the state to create conditions for restoration of natural relations in accordance with the family law. The substitute care, in particular adoption, should be considered only if the natural family environment of the child cannot be restored with help of the state. However, full resignation of the state to the exercise of parental duties and obligations, in particular to the result of child´s education, does not bring the desired result. Proper education of children is not only the interest of their parents, but also an important interest of society. This idea was already formulated by Aristotle stating that „the most important task of the legislator is to arrange the education of youth“. The balance between the protection of privacy, the interests of a child and the interests of society may significantly contribute to this balance. One of the basic means for achievement of the desired balance is sound legislation, for which a wide area has been opened up at the time of recodification of private law.

It is impossible in one article to give a full account of John Paul II’s teachings on the positive impact of the media on the family and social life. A family, through their relationships with the society, is an important reality in human life. In the contemporary world the richness of the family is minimized, often rejected and even ridiculed. It is true that such tendencies are visible in the media, but on the other hand it is the media that can contribute to forming proper relationships, both within the family, thereby recognizing its value, and within the society. However, in order to achieve this the message sent by the media should be characterized by openness to others and should build the awareness within individuals of the values and respect for the other human being. It should also form, through the media, the image of freedom as an inherent value of human life. John Paul II sets the media specific tasks. On one hand, the Pope sees in them a great value, on the other hand he requires that both administrators of mass media as well as journalists respect human life, build and shape the public opinion properly and, finally, pay attention to the combination of values offered by faith and those related to culture. It is worth seeing and knowing the positive impact of the media on the family, the relationships both within the family and society. This will make it possible to use the media in a better way when building the good. But on the other hand one should not forget about the dangers the media might pose.
