The paper discusses the idea of socialized market, developed among others by Karl Polanyi and German ordoliberalism and institutionalized in the framework of the welfare state. The idea is eroding since labour interests, backed by the capitalist state have come under pressure of global business. Under globalized competition the welfare state seems to submit the idea of socialized market on behalf of the idea of free market. The European Union which is an association of national welfare states, paradoxically, seems to follow the economic liberalism (neoliberalism). Poland in spite of constitutional declaration on behalf of social market economy actually seems to undertake the UE drift. A study of pension funds has been undertaken in order to illustrate the trend observed, namely the shrinking of socialized sphere on behalf of the expansion of private global interests. The study refers to operations of so called 'second pillar' of the pension system in Poland.

In the wake of population ageing and increasing public pension liabilities, many countries have reformed their pension systems, moving away (at least partially) from defined benefit (DB) pension schemes and towards defined contribution (DC) pension schemes. Slovakia’s reformed its pension system into two main pillars – I. pillar PAYG scheme and II. pillar DC scheme. Slovak pension reform brings up a lot of questions regarding the optimality of two main pillars pension system set up. In this paper, we seek to investigate the effects of different Slovak pension system set up alternatives and their implications on lifecycle savings and individual welfare using own stochastic life cycle model of partial equilibrium. Results could serve as a basis for further discussion on improving the legislature on parameters’ set-up of both pension pillars in Slovakia as well as abroad.

Article deals with the existence and functioning of automatic balance mechanism (ABM) in the PAYG pension systems. By uncovering theoretical knowledge on ABM, we focus on its ability to overcome political risks and to stabilize the PAYG system in short and long run without drastic shock interventions, which are politically unstable. Further, we created and applied the ABM model into specific conditions of Slovak PAYG system and found its ability to balance PAYG system on cash and accrual basis. At the same time, we propose inevitable steps and changes in order to implement the model into practice and legislation.

Population ageing has initiated many discussions concerning the issue of economic security in retirement. The aim of this paper is to explore the cultural and social life of elderly in the local community in the village Trenčianska Teplá. Specifically, we focus on the issue of economic security and the extent to which it affects participation of elderly in community life. According to field research results, the economic inequalities at the retirement age are levelled out. The participation on the community life has more important influence on satisfaction and quality of life of elderly than their socioeconomic status. The pension height has only limited impact on satisfaction and quality of life of retired.
