The modern state of geographical studies on problems of peripherality in Ukraine has been analyzed. Three main factors which influence the intensity of carrying out such studies were determined: the influence of Soviet and Russian geographical science; the connection between studies of peripherality and the scientific range of economic-depression problems; and the specific features of the modern development of Ukrainian human-geography. The general features of a study of this range of problems in Ukraine at the regional and global level; structural characteristics of center, semi-periphery and periphery; and approaches by Ukrainian scientists have been described in relation to the mechanisms of forming peripherality, along with methods for its study and criteria of selection.

This article tries reassess the regional literature of the region of Zielona Gora (the historic Lebus Land) from a critical perspective which takes into account the 'topographic shift' and the changing status of the periphery in literary studies. In the 'Europe of regions' it is the local that claims to be the central reference point. The shift in critical interests opens new questions about both the rank and status of regional literature and the manner in which it represents the sense of place which is crucial to its identity. The case in point is the literary production of the Zielona Gora region. Its identity, which functions as a predominantly normative concept, is determined by its geographical locus and links with the idea of the region. It can be studied in the framework of 'tropes of topography' – a geopoetics which informs the work of regional writers and whose four markers are outlined in the article. The author of the article hopes that this critical framework and the preceding discussion will become a starting point for analyses, thematic surveys and comparative studies which combine the resources of literary criticism and the input of regional studies.

The article is a contribution to the discussion about the methodology of the historiography of so-called “national philosophy”. The author´s thesis is that the history of national philosophies (especially those of the 19th century) should be seen in the context of the Monarchy, while abandoning the conceptual apparatus of the traditional positivist comparative approach. This material serves to show the way the concepts like centre/periphery, subaltern position, subversion, containment, canon, pretext/post-text, transformation and imitation are being used today. In conclusion, different developments in Austrian, Czech, Hungarian, Slovak and Polish philosophies of 19th century come to the foreground.
