The aim of the article is to provide an analysis of Polish place-names ending in -la. The principle question asked by the authoess is whether this ending has a role of a word-formative suffix. The analysis shows that the formative -la has very small productivity; it occurs only in oikonyms Modla (of uncertain etymology), which would suggest the existence of a common noun modla (extinct nowadays) with a topographic meaning in Slavonic. The names Modla, belonging mostly to administratively independent objects (villages), recorded starting from 15th century, have rarely been subject to structural changes. They occur exclusively in Central Poland.

The paper deals with Lusatian place-names derived from a specific kind of personal names called apotropaia. These names are formed with the Slavic negation particles 'ne' or 'ni' (no, not) affixed to personal names in order to keep away demons and evil spirits from the newborn child. They belong to the oldest stratum of Slavic personal names. These derivative place names occur only in areas with very good soil. Ten of them are situated in Upper Lusatia, four in Lower Lusatia.

In the article the toponymic material gathered by the author in the field research was given. The data concerns the 'Zamczysko' entry that was missing in the published in 1992 'Dictionary of toponymy of North-Eastern Poland' by Nina Barszczewska, Jadwiga Gluszkowska, Teresa Jasinska and Elzbieta Smulkowa. In the author's opinion the name 'Zamczysko' is of significant importance in the research of the Suwalki region's past.

In accordance with the particulars of K. Oliva concerning the retrograde index of the development of place names in Bohemia and according to the processing of F. Curin (both based on the publication Mistni jmena v Cechach /Place Names in Bohemia/ by A. Profous), it is possible to supply the transformative types of place names in Bohemia derived from personal names with the following types: 1) -ov -ovice (Krekov - Krekovice), 2) -ice -ec (Kundratice - Kundratec), 3) -ovice -ovsko (Kralkovice - Kralkovsko), 4) -ovice -ovec (Maskovice - Maskovec).

The article provides an analysis of extinct names of mills in a part of West Bohemia, whose localisation had not been known before. The author tries to determine their localisation and follow the development of their names. It is concluded that the names of mills did not usually exist much longer than the mills, many of which became extinct during the 19th century, themselves.
