Polish education in the Grodno region in 1939-1948: sovietization, indoctrination, liquidation

.After re-gaining the Grodno region in 1944, the Soviet authorities intended to unify it with the USSR and to sovietizate the local Polish population. Consequently Soviet-type schools for Polish population were introduced in many places of the district. Accepting the Soviet State's educational policy by Polish people meant losing their own identity. But in those historical conditions the Poles of Grodno region were not able to resist ideological attack of Stalin's regime. Making use of the partial emigration of Poles in 1944-1947 the local authorities reduced the number of Polish schools that they considered as the centers of anti-Sovietism. This policy led to the total liquidation of the Polish educational system in Grodno in 1948. The consequences of Soviet educational policy aimed at sovietization of the Poles of Grodno region can be seen even nowadays.
