The author formulates hypothesis that there is confusion between the predicate ‘it is true’ and some epistemic concepts, namely the predicate itself eliminates those concepts.

The paper considers Quine's maxim: 'To be is to be the value of a variable'. After some remarks on the actual and possible Polish translations of ontological commitment, an analysis of the doctrine follows. In conclusion, Quine's restriction of ontology to the possible referents of terms, to the exclusion of the possible referents of predicates, is claimed unjustified, both in the light of subsequent development of Quine's thought and in the light of empiricism in general. Next, an attempt is made to account for the question of the referents of predicates in the framework of empiricism. A solution is sketched in terms of a revision of the so-called syntagmatic presuppositions. In this account, Quine's maxim is generalized to 'to be is to satisfy a syntagmatic presupposition'.

The aim of the paper is to show that in the framework of philosophy of science it is possible to choose such an approach to the reconstruction of scientific laws and scientific explanation and also to the testing of scientific theories which enables us to avoid the well-known raven paradox as stated by C. G. Hempel. The paper starts with an analysis of Hempel’s approach to the so-called “purely qualitative predicates.” Then it shows how this approach, which has its origins in the perceptualist philosophy, led Hempel to a completely distorted view on the structure of scientific laws and scientific explanation, that in turn led him to a distorted view on the testing of scientific theories. As an alternative the paper proposes another view on the structure of scientific laws, scientific explanation and introduction of theoretical magnitudes using the method of definition by abstraction. Consequently, it also proposes an alternative view on the testing of scientific theories which eliminates the raven paradox.

The paper deals with the certain problems concerning semantic structure of sentence on the basis of the theoretical and methodological postulates and analysis presented in the work Semantic Structure of Slovak Sentence (2012) by Eva Tibenská. The paper describes some open questions concerning the investigation how semantic and syntactic aspects of sentence structure cooperate. The paper concentrates especially on problems arising with the classification of predicates and delimiting the semantic roles of subject and object participants in the sentence structures. A special attention is put on the questions connected with the semantic structures of subject less sentence and the understanding of causative sentences in the language. The paper also analyses the meaning of the structures in which dative participant occurs with regard to its semantic interpretation.
