The article presents the main aspects of the discussion taking place in Poland in the period between the two world wars about the establishment of a press research institute responsible for studying the press and its social impact. The participants of the discussion agreed that such an organization was necessary but differed as to the scope of its operation, formal and legal status and sources of funding. The 'Prasa' periodical (published by the Polish Association of Newspaper and Periodical Editors) was since 1930 the main forum of that discussion.
