The presented study analyses the social and personal predictors of the perception of safety, as a cognitive-emotional image of safety conditions in a defined living space of an individual. There is no consensus on the definition and measurement of security as a dependent variable. Particular tools are used to monitor the risk of victimization, fear of crime and preventive behavior. The aim of the study is to analyse the effect of vulnerability, victimization and contextual variables (ethnic threat, neighborhood issues) on the security perception, fear of crime, and preventive behavior in Slovakia. The second goal was to verify the impact of other psychological constructs – the need for structure, self-control, and conservatism – on these dependent variables. The results of the study confirmed a different structure of the predictors of security perception, fear of crime, as well as preventive behavior. Almost all the traditionally studied predictors were significant for the security perception. It has been confirmed that vulnerable groups, particularly women, the elderly, respondents from larger cities, and the victimized are more likely to have a lower level of security perception; which corresponds to a number of findings that repeatedly confirm the significant impact of the vulnerability factors on the security perception. Preventive behavior in this context appears to be a significantly different construct as compared to the security perception and fear of crime. The question of the impact of other psychological constructs on the preventive behavior remains open.

The paper deals with the problem of economic fraud and the role of Internal Audit as a tool for preventing it. As the economic downturn intensifies, the possibility of disputes and other difficulties arises more frequently. More often employees and contracting parties try to shift their own losses on to other economic entities. When internal rules are broken or either are not established, organizations are exposed to risks and problems that they are often not used to dealing with. As the analyzed case study showed threats of an economic fraud can come also from inside the company. Embezzlement concerning expense reimbursement is one of the most 'popular' ways to steal money from inside the company. To prevent such situations from happening Internal Audit Unit has to perform assurance and consulting actions to deter this particular and any other type of fraud. When the actual fraud occurs an important element, is the properly divide roles between an internal auditor and the forensic specialist who is adequately prepared to lead the investigation, find evidence, and bring fraudsters to justice.

The aim of this study was to provide results of a preliminary evaluation of the BRIGE (Bridging Resilience through Intervention, Guidance, and Empowerment) prevention program. The program was designed for youths aging out of the foster care system in Poland and starting independent life. Prior research by our research team documented that these youth are at high risk for homelessness, mental health problems, and other poor outcomes in the years after exiting foster care. Research participants were the first 5 youths who entered the BRIGE program (in fall 2009). All were preparing to leave orphanages in Poland. Each youth was appointed a case manager who worked with the youth over a period of at least 18 months. Each youth was evaluated at 4 times of measurement: program entry (Baseline), 6 months (follow-up 1), 12 months (follow-up 2), and 18 months (follow-up 3). The results showed that, in terms of mental health outcomes on the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), there were reductions in most symptom areas.

This paper aims at discussing certain problems related to the effectiveness of prevention campaigns as observed during the programme against HIV/AIDS which took place among empoverished populations in a peri-urban part of Beira in Mozambique. As far as the evalution study of the programme has shown, the resistance to some messages diffused during the prevention campaigns cannot be explained only in terms of vulnerability of people concerned, nor as a problem of local culture. On the contrary, there should be more concern for complex solutions to the epidemic since it represents a fait social total.

The contribution monitors the burnout level in social workers of a district office from the departments for job services, for social affairs, and that for assessment activities. A total of 65 employees (not including any managing workers) exhibited the medium burnout level - the so-called level of risk. The degree of achieved education appeared to be a preventive factor. Social workers alone considered contribution from part of their organization to be important: change of work organization; relaxation offered by their organization; therapeutic sessions; positive evaluation on the employer's part.

In the article author describes a preventive system initiated by the Reverend John Bosco, who was an Italian priest who lived in the 19th century. His system absolutely rejected any type of corporal punishment, as it was thought to be an ineffective way of upbringing. In his pedagogical activity the Reverend John Bosco took care of desolated young boys whom he provided protection and education. Thanks to that many illiterate boys belonging to criminal groups were able to get a profession and could honestly work for themselves. The Reverend John Bosco tried to increase number of oratorios and schools and at the same time wanted to found a new friar congregation. He successfully established the Society of Salesians and from 150 years it runs many different social institutions, including the Salesianic educational centre in Rozanystok. The main goal of the research made for the article is the diagnosis of the Salesianic educational centre in Rozanystok in terms of cohesion of punishment and rewards to assumptions of preventive system. The research has been made with the use of the so-called monographic method. The author proves that in that specific institution no one uses corporal punishment, in fact the only form of punishing is lack of privileges. In the most dii cult cases a pupil who causes problems that harms the whole group can be punished by transferring to another institution. The system of punishments and rewards characterized in the article may be an inspiration for pedagogical educators and teachers who use the methods described in their work.

In the study, the author sums up the activity of the imperial and royal camp and reserve brothels, established in 1915 by the military authorities of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, operating during the World War 1. The organisational rules of the camp and reserve brothels originating within divisions with the aim to prevent the spread of venereal diseases in the army and to protect the soldiers’ health (in 1915, 12% of the troops were infected) are introduced. The author zooms in on the regulations regarding the brothel activity, obligations of the staff and prostitutes as well as the effort of the authorities to build a whole network of brothels. Readers will learn about the headquarters regulations, issued to prevent the spread of venereal diseases among soldiers (raising awareness, medical check-ups several times a week, handing out free protection, etc.), uncovering similar civilian and military health regulations issued for the rear areas as well. The author informs about the operation of brothels established in the territories occupied by the Austro-Hungarian army (according to the Serbian example) and the hygienic and other regulations for the prostitutes working there. The author briefly informs the readers about the works of significant contemporary expert physicians and their work in the field of edification in order to suppress the spread of venereal diseases.

Poland belongs to European countries characterized by the highest mortality of women caused by cervical cancer - a neoplasm that is fully curable if detected early enough. It happens so despite of several, broadly designed prevention actions addressed to women, encouraging them to participate in preventive screenings. Therefore, the question arises: why do women contact the doctors so late? What is the cause of their reluctance to prevention of the life-threatening disease? The article tries to address these questions looking for the answer among structural and socio-cultural variables influencing women's approach to health and disease. The research results under discussion concern the problems of gynecological prevention among women threatened with social exclusion.
