The text focuses on the multiple forms of religiosity (based on different types of motivation) of inmates in Czech prisons from the perspective of three groups of respondents: prison inmates, prison guards and representatives of a number of churches. The study is based on an ethnographic study of prisons in the Czech Republic. The data corpus includes qualitative interviews with selected actors in the prison world, material gathered through observations inside prisons and an analysis of the documentation on the Czech penitentiary system. Through this research, we found that the key respondents feel that there is some ambivalence around the religiosity of inmates and that the pragmatic approach many inmates take to faith is becoming a controversial issue. Our research demonstrated that the presence of religiosity of inmates in prison is not really accepted in a clearly positive manner as it may seem at first glance. On the contrary, the presence of it in prisons has become the subject of controversy among its main actors.

The chaplain, with a religious background practicing pastoral care, plays a role that conflicts with the norms of the secular institution that formally employs him. In this regard, prison is a highly challenging workplace. Drawing on qualitative data, we examine the position and identity of the prison chaplain in the Czech prison system. We argue that the main source of tension within the workplace is the chaplain’s profound interest in a prisoner’s personal life. This tendency is in a clear contrast with the intentions of the punitive prison system. Examples the potential of chaplain’s role are also discussed.

From the end of the third quarter of year 2000 the number of penal individuals crosses the number of places provided for them. Therefore building of many convict prisons is necessary. The problem is if the private enterprises should or can participate in. Publication portrays in small degree the current situation of prison management, the idea of PPP as well as advantages and disadvantages of building prisons in support of Public Private Partnership model.

The penalty of imprisonment played above all a role of a preventive means in Poland in the 18th century. Imprisoning an accused person was to make him/her unable to run away during the trial. This way of treating the penalty of imprisonment derived to a large extent from the lack of proper places of isolation and costs of the upkeep of a prisoner. The situation changed slowly with time and the penalty of imprisonment ceased to be regarded as a preventive means exclusively, but an institution of a substantive law. The source of the investigation is above all the book of criminal cases that were dealt with between 1722 and 1791 in a magistrates’ court in Kraków. The book covers almost the whole century, which allows for a reconstruction of the court practice. Additionally, the acts of the mag- istrates’ court in Kraków from 1792—1793 which replaced the previous body were examined. The analyses of the sentences from the magistrates’ court in Kraków prove that the penalty of imprisonment was available in the 18th century. It was used in three different ways. Traditionally, the prisoner was placed in one of the two towers. With time, it was a local prison and the community home that was a proper place for serving a sentence. In the 1780s, on the basis of the legal act of Rada Nieustająca, the accused could be sent to the fortress in Kamień Podolski. Owing to an insufficient number of places adjusted to imprisonment the fortress in Częstochowa started to fulfill the function of the prison and the ones convicted by a magistrates’ court were to be found among the prisoners.

The text focuses on the relationship inmates have to their bodies during imprisonment. The data presented in this study are based on ethnographic research carried out in Czech men's high security prisons. The data set consists of interviews with partakers from the “world of prisoners”, observations from prisons and analysis of documents relating to Czech prison service. The analysis shows there is a strong relationship between the physical body and the process of constructing manhood/masculinity in the population of inmates. The physical body is one of crucial components of the masculine/macho prison code/culture. The attitude inmates have to their bodies seems to be altering, depending on the stage of imprisonment in which they currently are. For the description of this alteration the author uses the concept of the body as a project, which may serve as one of the possible ways of understanding the importance of the physical body to inmates during their imprisonment and changing motivations to its further development.

The aim of the study was to analyse how a social hierarchy among inmates in Czech prisons is formed and reinforced. The data presented in this paper is based on the original ethnographic research conducted in Czech prisons. The data for analysis was collected from qualitative interviews with selected participants of the prison environment; observations carried out inside the prisons and from the documents related to the Czech prison service. The findings indicate that the formation of inmate hierarchy in Czech prisons is strongly influenced by both endogenous (physical strength, psychological manipulation, economic capital, criminal history) and exogenous (effect of prison authority) factors.

The text focuses on the relationship between aggression and the formation of social status in prisoners in selected prison with maximum security. The article is based on a sociological survey conducted from February to April 2022. A questionnaire survey among convicted men, classified as a prison with medium and high grade security, addresses the perception of risk of conflicts between prisoners, especially in terms of age differences and number of incarcerations. Methodologically, the text takes the form of a case study, mainly due to the complexity of obtaining valid data from convicted criminals. The main goal is to evaluate the level of threat to the life and health of prisoners and prison staff in the real environment. The article deals with the manifestations of aggressive behaviour in the execution of the sentence and their reflection by prisoners. The part of the text does not cover only the typology of individual manifestations of the so-called prison violence, but also the presentation of diagnostics and monitoring of these excesses by the Prison Service of the Czech Republic.
