The paper analyses the evolution of privatisation of state-owned enterprises in Poland in years 1990-2011, its directions, intensity and economic efficiency. Total revenue from privatisation in the analysed period accounted for almost PLN 147 billion, of which almost 87% was derived from indirect privatisation. Overall, the influence of the privatisation process on the financial performance of enterprises in Poland is positive. The evidence shows that its most efficient form was indirect privatisation. Also employee-owned companies and sole-shareholder companies of the State Treasury achieved good financial results, although not for the entire analysed period. The mass privatisation programme in the shape of National Investment Funds was found to be by far least effective economically.

The article is a synthesis of considerations contained in a book titled 'Panstwowe gospodarstwa rolne w procesie przemian systemowych w Polsce' (State-owned Farms in the Process of Systemic Transformation in Poland) which was published by the Institute of Rural and Agricultural Development of the Polish Academy of Science (IRWiR PAN). The aim of the work was to present facts, analyses and the broadest possible knowledge about transformations in the state-owned farms. It represents an attempt at explaining why restructuring processes in the Polish state-owned farms were so radical and at finding out whether their privatisation could have been accomplished in a different and more successful way.

This article aims at finding a theoretical and empirical explanation for the particular housing privatisation approach applied in the Czech Republic. The explanation pays special attention to inequalities in owner-occupied housing accessibility created by housing privatisation. In order to explain the process of housing privatisation, the article discusses theories of social change (transition, transformation and path dependence). The following qualitative empirical analysis of alternative theoretical explanations consists of thirteen semi-structured interviews with politicians, state officials, municipal experts and local citizen movements. In addition, the data from the interviews is commented with the use of the data from public opinion about housing policy. In the conclusion, the author critically evaluates the usefulness of presented theories (especially path dependence) and states that the privatisation process should be explained as a transformation rather than a transition, with a specific role played by ideology. The analysis led to a conclusion that the consequences were unseen given the “ad-hoc” feature of policy decisions.

The main characteristics of public space are accessibility and usability for all citizens. However, current developments, primarily observed in cities, suggest the loss of a clear distinction between public and private space. Instead, urban spaces of hybrid character are emerging. Spaces with public functions, like train stations, parks or pedestrian areas, are changing in character, and semi-private spaces, like malls or plazas, are spreading. In order to get a realistic view of developments this article offers a critical appraisal of recent privatisation trends followed by a brief summary. After discussing feasible reasons for the loss of private space the article considers potential implications for the future of citizenship.
