Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease. Due to a constantly growing rate of incidence and the lowering age of PD patients it is becoming a more serious social problem. The aim of this study is to assess the quality of life amongst care givers for people suffering from Parkinson's disease. The work includes research on the influence of physical rehabilitation of PD patients on the quality of life of their care givers. The research covered care givers (n=50) of PD patients diagnosed with third stage PD according to the Hoehn and Yahr classification. The diagnostics survey with a questionnaire addressed to care givers looking after PD patients was used. The questionnaire was created by the authors of this paper. The survey consisted of two parts, in which the first was to obtain basic information on the present status of the care giver, while the other was to verify life satisfaction level, using Jurczynski's Scale of Life Satisfaction. Statistical analysis showed significant differences in all analyzed statements between groups. Better effects were observed in the group participating in rehabilitation. Care for people suffering from PD affects the quality of life of caregivers. Participation in the process of rehabilitation of patients with PD improves the quality of life of caregivers.
Communication difficulties in Parkinson’s disease (PD) arise not only as the result of the motor symptoms of the disorder, but also as a consequence of cognitive and affective impairments which are recognised as being part of the disease process. These changes are thought to account for much of the stigma associated with the condition, thereby complicating the ability of patients to inter-relate with others, including their closest family. This inevitably affects quality of life for both the patient and those family members involved in his/her care. The present paper presents an analysis of how the deficits in motor and cognitive function associated with PD in the form of reduced facial expressivity, altered language skills, motor and cognitive slowness and disturbances in the pragmatic aspects of language affect the communication abilities of patients with the disorder and give rise to stigmatisation, which in turn impacts the disability seen in PD.
The purpose of this article is to present speech disorders of 91 years old patient suffering from advanced Parkinson’s disease (it is the last stage of the disease when all symptoms are stronger) and to draw attention to the need of mentioning the impact of speech therapy while describing the disease. In the article an author is introducing the patient and her current condition. Mainly it is focused on the speech therapy diagnosis that was based on particular aspects of speech (such as: general condition of the patient, phonation, comprehension of speech and naming, repea- ting, dialogues and storytelling, reading, counting and writing). In the final part, the effectiveness of speech therapy is presented. This publication might become a leading example for other speech therapist on how to manage the therapy for people suffering from these types of disorders in speaking and communication.
Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (PD) impairs working memory, but the exact nature of this deficit in terms of the underlying cognitive mechanisms is not well understood. In this study patients with mild clinical symptoms of PD were compared with matched healthy control subjects on a computerized battery of tests designed to assess spatial working memory and verbal working memory. In the spatial working memory task, subjects were required to recall a sequence of four locations. The verbal working memory task was methodologically identical except for the modality of the stimuli used, requiring subjects to orally recall a sequence of six digits. In either case, half of the sequences were structured in a way that allowed ‘chunking’, while others were unstructured. This manipulation was designed to dissociate the strategic component of task performance from the memory-load component. Mild medicated patients with PD were impaired only on the structured versions of the verbal working memory tasks. The analogous deficit in the spatial working memory was less pronounced. These findings are in agreement with the hypothesis that working memory deficits in PD reflect mainly the executive component of the tasks and that the deficits may be at least partly modality-independent.
Graphomotor skills are the object of research in the developmental aspect (in the normal and in diverse pathological cases, in the context of the child’s acquisition of basic school skills) and in the cases of their loss, e.g. in the course of neurodegenerative diseases. Because of the fact that writing disorders often accompany speech disorders, particularly those determined neurologically, the assessment of graphomotor skills as a sphere important for written communication (and thereby linguistic communication) should be an obligatory element of logopedic diagnosis. In the case of dysarthric patients and accompanying graphomotor disorders the analysis of specificity of these disorders (both the course of graphomotor activities and their products) may help diagnose clinical neuromotor symptoms, which in turn facilitates diagnosis of a clinical type of dysarthria.

Objectives Veterans of the 1991 Gulf War (GW) were exposed to a myriad of potentially hazardous chemicals during deployment. Epidemiological data suggest a possible link between chemical exposures and Parkinson’s disease (PD); however, there have been no reliable data on the incidence or prevalence of PD among GW veterans to date. This study included the following 2 questions: 1. Do deployed GW veterans display PD-like symptoms? and 2. Is there a relationship between the occurrence and quantity of PD-like symptoms, and the levels of deployment-related exposures in GW veterans? Material and Methods Self-reports of symptoms and exposures to deployment-related chemicals were filled out by 293 GW veterans, 202 of whom had undergone 3 Tesla volumetric measurements of basal ganglia volumes. Correlation analyses were used to examine the relationship between the frequency of the veterans’ self-reported exposures to deployment-related chemicals, motor and non-motor symptoms of PD, and the total basal ganglia volumes. Results Healthy deployed GW veterans self-reported few PD-like non-motor symptoms and no motor symptoms. In contrast, GW veterans with Gulf War illness (GWI) self-reported more PD-like motor and non-motor symptoms, and more GW-related exposures. Compared to healthy deployed veterans, those with GWI also had lower total basal ganglia volumes. Conclusions Although little is known about the long-term consequences of GWI, findings from this study suggest that veterans with GWI show more symptoms as those seen in PD/prodromal PD, compared to healthy deployed GW veterans. Choroba Parkinsona jest samoistną, powoli postępującą zwyrodnieniową chorobą układu nerwowego. Dotyczy głównie osób starszych, a średni wiek zachorowalności wynosi 58 lat. Częściej chorują mężczyźni niż kobiety i dotyczy coraz większej liczby osób.

Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease is a slowly progressive degenerative disease of the nervous system. This concerns mainly the elderly, and the average age of incidence is 58 years. There is a higher rate of Parkinson’s disease in men than women and it concerns an increasing number of people. According to WHO, there are five million people suffering from this disease in the world. The main symptoms are following: tremor at rest, slowness of movement and muscle stiffness. The mechanism of its formation has not been elucidated, but the degenerative process concerns the basal ganglia, particularly the substantia nigra and comes to erode the dopaminergic system and consequently to the destabilization of other neurotransmitter systems. Therapeutic treatment for Parkinson’s disease is complex and should include not only pharmacotherapy, but also other types of impacts on patient and disease, such as rehabilitation, appropriate lifestyle and diet as well as education and support to both patients and their families. The aim of this work was to present a health problem in patients with Parkinson’s disease as well as nursing procedures to a patient with Parkinson’s disease.
Due to the aging of societies, the increased prevalence of patients with dementia is observed. Parkinson’s disease is one of the most frequent neurodegenerative disorders and occurs mainly in people in age over 50 years. The core symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are bradykinesia, tremor and plastic rigidity. The main purpose of the study was to looked for answers to questions about the individual sense of experience, about relationships with others, and to change behaviours focused on taking life actions. The following research questions were sought: What meaning does the respondent give to her experience? How does she respond to news of chronic illness? How does illness change a person’s life? How does living with a chronic disease affect an individual’s identity? The study was conducted in February 2019 by the author of the article, using the biographical method and narrative interview technique. Social scientific research on experiencing chronic illness focuses directly on pivotal players in health care – people who are sick. The research on experiencing chronic illness emphasizes how people come to view themselves as chronically ill, and how illness affects their lives.

The article described verbal fluency in people diagnosed with mild dementia in the Parkinson’s disease. The possibility of generating city names was investigated. The method of clinical experiment was used to achieve the research goal. The results of the obtained research were subjected to qualitative and quantitative analysis. The quantitative assessment included the result of the so-called word production. Assessment of time parameters. The qualitative assessment was aimed at: analyzing the mistakes; characteristics of phenomena that suggest dysfunctions of semantic dictionary; description of the cluster generation strategy. The results were combined with the probable causes of the impaired verbal fluency. The specificity of this process was indicated. This article is an introduction to a broader comparative study of semantic fluency in terms of common names and proper names in Parkinson’s disease.

W artykule podjęto próbę oceny fluencji słownej u osób ze zdiagnozowanym otępieniem w stopniu lekkim w przebiegu choroby Parkinsona, w zakresie wybranej kategorii toponimów – nazw miast. Do osiągnięcia celu badawczego wykorzystano metodę eksperymentu klinicznego. Wyniki uzyskanych badań poddano analizie jakościowej oraz ilościowej. Ocena ilościowa obejmowała wynik tzw. produkcji słownej oraz wskazanie wybranych parametrów czasowych. Ocena jakościowa miała na celu: analizę popełnianych błędów; charakterystykę zjawisk, które sugerują obecność dysfunkcji słownika semantycznego; opis strategii generowania klastrów. Wyniki połączono z prawdopodobnymi przyczynami ubożenia fluencji słownej, wskazano specyfikę tego procesu. Niniejszy artykuł jest wstępem do szerszych badań porównawczych, dotyczących fluencji semantycznej w zakresie nazw pospolitych i nazw własnych w przebiegu choroby Parkinsona.
Artykuł zawiera przegląd badań i wybranych rozwiązań zastosowania biofeedbacku we współczesnej neurorehabilitacji. Dlatego też można stwierdzić, iż wiele z zaprezentowanych rozwiązań należy wprowadzić do nowoczesnego modelu postępowania z pacjentem neurologicznym.

This article includes a review of research and chosen solutions of use of biofeedback in contemporary neurorehabilitation. Their subject matter concerns persons suffering from neurological diseases. These kinds of research are performed increasingly, so the scientific reports that are more and more numerous indicate the fact that properly constructed therapeutic programs may improve the treatment results in case of many neurological problems in the field of neurorehabilitation, also the cognitive one. Therefore, so called traditional model of procedure is often “enriched” with new therapeutic methods or improved rehabilitation equipment. All these modifications aim at the faster recovery of patient or full use of his/her widely understood functioning potential. As one can see, the biofeedback method should be successfully used not only as an expansion of standard therapeutic procedure but in many cases also as its integral part. Therefore, one can state that many of the presented solutions shall be implemented to the contemporary model of proceeding with neurological patient.

Materiał i metody W badaniach uczestniczyło 109 osób z rozpoznaną PD w II stopniu zaawansowania według skali Hoehn i Yahr. Do określenia stanu klinicznego zastosowano Ujednoliconą Skalę Oceny Choroby Parkinsona (Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale – UPDRS). Do określenia jakości życia wykorzystano skale: Kwestionariusz Choroby Parkinsona (Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire – PDQ-39), Kwestionariusz Oceny Jakości Życia SF-36 (SF-36 – short form, wersja skrócona) i Kwestionariusz Jakości Życia Osób z Chorobą Parkinsona (Parkinson’s Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire – PDQL). Wyniki Uzyskane wyniki wykazały istotne statystycznie różnice międzygrupowe w ocenie jakości życia we wszystkich badanych skalach: PDQ-39 (F = 5,278, p = 0,04), SF komponent fizyczny (F = 4,24, p = 0,005), SF komponent psychiczny (F = 3,45, p = 0,021) i PDQL (F = 6,57, p = 0,003). Med. Pr. 2017;68(6):725–734
This article describes new innovations for people with neurocognitive disorders, which are implemented not in England only but also throughout all the UK. Following the publication of a report in 2007 by the Comptroller and Auditor General National Audit Office on „Improving Services and Support for Persons with Dementia,” set up in 2009, the first National Dementia Strategy was launched under the theme „Living better with dementia. At this time, ambitious goals have been set that aim to improve the quality of life of people with dementia and their carers (Bourn, 2007). In 2012 Prime Minister David Cameron launched Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia. In response, the Alzheimer Society has launched a program to create a friendly environment for people with dementia under the banner of Dementia Friends. The English Department of Health has identified tasks for NHS Health EducationEngland to deliver the necessary skills to provide the best quality care for people with dementia (Health Education England, 2017) and the NHS England, which launched the Well Pathway for Dementia.
