Impact of foreign ownership on innovation

Prior research provides evidence on the impact of ownership structures on corporate performance. One attribute of corporate performance is the technological achievement. Foreign ownership might have positive impact on technological achievement through increase in research and development (R&D) intensity or technology transfers. The aim of this study is analyze the impact of foreign ownership on both R&D intensity and technological achievement measured by patents and patent applications in a developing country context. When interpreted together, results suggest that technological achievement is mostly related to internationalization of the firm both through trade and ownership in addition to size and R&D intensity.

The last decade of the 18th century in French history did not only mean changes in political and social order, but also in scientific progress. Although intellectual property had deep roots in France, it did not have a firm order. The interest in the codification and amendment of the patent law reflected the need to motivate the French inventive spirit and the desire to face British trade dominance on the continent in the form of trade competition. The culmination was to showcase the best products France could offer, with its latent motive to stimulate the business environment and make the country an industrially competitive area in continental Europe.

PURPOSE/THESIS: The article analyses patent applications for inventions in the area of electronic publishing. Its investigates how the number of patent applications changed in the years 2014–2018, which companies were the most active in the field, and what was their providence. The issues of crucial importance to the inventors were identified by the study of the symbols used by International Patent Classification. APPROACH/METHODS: The analysis was based on the data from the base Lens.org from years 2014–2018. In total, 1733 patent applications related to electronic publishing were identified. RESULTS AND CONSLUSIONS: The study recorded an increasing activity of Chinese and Korean inventors, and a low number of patent applications filed by European firms. The applicants focus on specific functions facilitating interaction between the user and digital devices; a relatively high number of applications is concerned with electronic commerce, and with the use of electronic publishing in education. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: An analysis of patent applications may help to identify specific phenomena occur­ing in the field of information technologies. It records the recent trends in research, and identifies the countries and agents which lead the development of widely understood electronic publishing.

CEL/TEZA: W artykule dokonano analizy zgłoszeń patentowych dotyczących publikacji elektronicznych. Celem badań była odpowiedź na pytanie, jak w latach 2014–2018 kształtowała się liczba wniosków patentowych, z jakich krajów pochodziły firmy zgłaszające wynalazki oraz jakie firmy były najbardziej aktywne na tym polu. Na podstawie analizy symboli Międzynarodowej Klasyfikacji Patentowej starano się także wyodrębnić pewne kluczowe zagadnienia, nad którymi pracują wynalazcy. KONCEPCJA/METODY BADAŃ: Źródłem analizy były dane z bazy Lens.org obejmujące lata 2014–2018. Łącznie zidentyfikowano 1733 opublikowanych wniosków, dotyczących publikacji elektronicznych oraz urządzeń zapewniających do nich dostęp. WYNIKI I WNIOSKI: Zwraca uwagę duża aktywność chińskich i koreańskich wynalazców oraz niska liczba zgłoszeń patentowych europejskich firm. Wnioskodawcy koncentrują się głównie na pewnych funkcjach ułatwiających interakcję użytkownika z urządzeniami cyfrowymi, ale stosunkowo liczne są także zgłoszenia wynalazków związanych z handlem elektronicznym czy wykorzystaniem publikacji elektronicznych do celów edukacyjnych. ORYGINALNOŚĆ/WARTOŚĆ POZNAWCZA: Analiza zgłoszeń patentowych może być pomocna w identyfikowaniu określonych zjawisk zachodzących obszarze technologii informacyjnych. Wskazuje zarówno kierunki prac badawczych, jak i kraje i podmioty, które odgrywają wiodącą rolę w rozwoju szeroko rozumianego obszaru publikacji elektronicznych.

We współczesnym, coraz lepiej skomunikowanym, świecie wyraźnie dostrzega się konieczność kooperacji podmiotów o różnych uzupełniających się zasobach i kompetencjach. Również w obszarze kształtowania innowacyjności postuluje się potrzebę wzmacniania współpracy. Budzi to z kolei zainteresowanie kwestią analizy relacji międzyorganizacyjnych, której jednym z istotnych nurtów jest badanie struktur wyłaniających się sieci podmiotów funkcjonujących w gospodarce. Metodą, która jest na tym polu szeroko stosowana jest analiza sieci. Badania z jej wykorzystaniem opierają się głównie na afiliacji oraz relacjach identyfikowanych w badaniach sondażowych. W niniejszym artykule omówiono dotychczasowe podejścia badawcze do pomiaru i odwzorowywania sieci międzyorganizacyjnych, budujących systemy innowacji wraz ze wskazaniem ograniczeń metodycznych.

In today’s increasingly well-linked world there clearly occurs the necessity for cooperation of entities of different and complementary resources and competences. Also in the field of shaping the innovativeness some postulate the need for cooperation enhancement. It raises the interest of inter-organizational relations analysis and one of its significant paths is the study of emerging network structures. The method, that is widely applied in this research area is the network analysis (social or organizational – SNA/ONA). The research with its use is based mostly on affiliation or relationships identified by surveys. The paper discusses current research approaches and their limitations for measuring and mapping inter-organizational networks, that constitute innovation systems.

W artykule poruszone zostały zagadnienia związane z międzynarodową dyfuzją wiedzy. Scharakteryzowano w nim jedną z bibliometrycznych metod jej mierzenia - cytowania patentowe. Następnie, opierając się na danych z bazy polskiego Urzędu Patentowego, przeprowadzono badania odwołań patentowych wytypowanych przedsię¬biorstw. Przeprowadzona na potrzeby artykułu analiza umieszczonych w dokumentacji patentowej odwołań zagranicznych wykazała, że polskie przedsiębiorstwa aktywne wy¬nalazczo w wysokim stopniu wykorzystują zagraniczną wiedzę, dla części z nich stanowi ona wręcz podstawowe źródło inwencji. Dominującą pozycję w cytowaniach zajmują amerykańskie rozwiązania technologiczne.

The article discusses issues related to international diffusion of knowledge. It characterizes one of bibliometric methods to measure diffusion of knowledge - patent citations. Then, based on the data from the Polish Patent Office database, patent appeals of selected enterprises have been studied. The analysis of foreign patent appeals, carried out for the needs of the article, revealed that Polish companies acting as inventors to a high degree use foreign expertise, for some of them it is even the primary source of inventions. Dominant position in the citations involved American technology solutions.
