If the presence of extracts from the life of the author (Paul Auster) allows us to postulate the “autobiographical” project of the memorial writing, others on the contrary confer it with a fictive project. The use of a stratagem of increased self-distancing and the multiple “mise en abyme” of identities leaves us puzzled as to the existence of an autobiographical scheme specific to Auster’s creation. Through the many forms of auctorial disguises, games of duplication, selfreflective mirroring, identity usurpation and handwritten possession, memorial writing integrates the different autobiographies of others. These are transformed into a functionalized or “real” autobiography of a subject who is a narrator, a character and an author.

Character as a Vanishing Point in American Experimental Fiction

My paper discusses the construction of character in some American experimental narratives within the optical paradigm of the vanishing point. In a first part the investment of the pictorial notion of the vanishing point in Faulkner’s Light in August will be discussed as an instance of the occasional confrontation in Modernist fiction of the limits of literary representation, even if the pictorial category is adapted (and so limited) to the specific issue of biracial identity. In a second part, William Gass’s short story “Mrs. Mean” and Paul Auster’s The Locked Room will be examined as instances of a sustained critical recasting of the very concept of character. The trope of the vanishing point is consciously deployed in both texts to reinvent fictional character within the challenging scope of borderlines between presence and absence, the life-like (mimetic) and the purely verbal.

The title phrase “photographic enclave” expresses the condition of projects that tell about a city using a photographic medium. The article discusses three audiovisual works that use photos to portray New York and its inhabitants: Smoke by Wayne Wang and Paul Auster, Stefan Nadelman’s Terminal Bar, and the multimedia project One in 8 Million. The works represent a variety of film models (drama, documentary, interactive media), and their authors use the formal and cognitive aspects of photography in a different ways. The aim of the article is to analyze the function of photography for portraying urban communities and to see if this treatment was successful.

An author is a Polish professor of literature at the Jagiellonian Unversity in Cracow. The author shows in her book entitled The Reading "Sacred" some essays on literature and "sacred", especially she describes some Polish poetry and prose and literary letters from 20th century. She focuses on the problem hermeneutics of a text, comparatistics of literature and methodology of literature. There are many chapters on theme Polish poetry or prose, e.g. about such authors as Stanisław Barańczak, Teresa Ferenc, Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, Julia Hartwig, Zbigniew Herbert, Zbigniew Jankowski, Wojciech Kudyba, Maria Kuncewiczowa, Czesław Miłosz, Joanna Pollakówna, Tadeusz Różewicz, Wisława Szymborska, Marcin Świetlicki, Jan Twardowski, Karol Wojtyła, Adam Zagajewski. There are some essays about foreign (e.g. French, German, Russian) authors of literature in the context of ‘sacred’: Paul Auster, Georges Bernanos, Josif Brodski, Hermann Hesse, Thomas Merton, Rainer Maria Rilke.
