In this article, the author aims to demonstrate that it is erroneous to attribute Josef Jungmann (1773–1847) with the translation into Czech of two letters by Pliny the Younger describing the eruption of Vesuvius, which destroyed Pompeii. The real translator, she argues, is Josef Jireček (1825–1888).
