Na wieść o wybuchu Powstania Warszawskiego dowództwo 9 Podlaskiej Dywizji Piechoty Armii Krajowej podjęło decyzję o udzieleniu pomocy walczącej stolicy. Stanowiłoby to znaczne wzmocnienie powstańczych sił. Sam 34 pułk piechoty AK liczył ok. 1400 ludzi, zaś cała dywizja liczyła ok. 3000 żołnierzy. Odsiecz organizowały m.in. obwody AK ze wschodniego Mazowsza i południowego Podlasia.

On hearing about the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, the headquarters of the 9th Podlasie Infantry Division of the Home Army took the decision to grant support to the fighting capital. It would constitute a substantial reinforcement of the insurgent forces. The 34th Infantry Regiment of the Home Army itself numbered as many as 1400 people, and the entire Division comprised approximately 3000 soldiers The rescue attempt was organised i.a. by sub-districts of the Home Army from the Eastern Mazovia and Southern Podlasie Regions.
In 2017 the collections of the State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw acquired a unique enamelled brooch found on the grounds of the village of Chlebczyn, Łosice County, in the valley of the Middle Bug, on the left, southern bank of that river2. The site of its discovery (Fig. 1) does not coincide with any of the archaeological sites recorded in that region3, thus, the brooch is either a genuine stray find, or it belongs to an as yet unidentified Roman Period cemetery or settlement. The brooch (Fig. 2) has a fan-shaped head with a raised compartment filled with white enamel, and a curved border with a row of punched dots and three round projections with a design of concentric circles; on the central projection there is a circular loop. The foot is trapeze-shaped, with a cell of red enamel, and three small round projections – two with cells of dark blue enamel, and one with residue of dark blue and green enamel (Fig. 3). The hinged fastening is incomplete. Length 43 mm, surviving height 9 mm, weight 6.39 g. Visible in the white enamel background are several, fairly regularly spaced round dimples with a distinct central cavity which originally held a small quantity of dark-coloured, presumably black enamel (Fig. 4). Similar inserts are a frequent form of decoration of plate brooches with a larger enamelled area, e.g., Roman sandal form brooches dated to the 2nd and 2nd/3rd centuries AD, where they imitate the nails studding the sole of the caligae5. At the same time, this form of decoration was used also in other types of enamelled brooches (Fig. 5). While the Roman provenance of the brooch find from Chlebczyn, and its general dating confined to the late 1st – late 2nd century are undeniable, its closer typological attribution is more problematic. The brooch belongs to a large – and quite varied – group of plate brooches with a single axis of symmetry8; many of these brooches have a small ring on the head. They are known mostly from the Rhine provinces and Gaul. So far, no good morphological analogy to our specimen has been identified among the numerous brooches of this group. According to Maxime Callewaert PhD7, the features of the brooch from Chlebczyn (projections decorated with enamel and the ocellated design, the cell filled with white enamel with small black dots of possibly black colour) establish the dating of this specimen as presumably, the second half of the 2nd century AD. The brooch is made of copper alloy containing 78.54% copper, 17.64% zinc and 2.34% lead, with a trace amount (0.39%) of tin4, thus, brass with a high content of zinc and lead content slightly higher than usual. Similar alloys were used widely in making small items, especially during the 1st century AD10. The dating proposed for the brooch does not permit a more conclusive culture attribution, but it does suggest that this specimen is more likely to belong to the Wielbark Culture rather than the Przeworsk Culture. In the immediate vicinity of Chlebczyn (Fig. 1) the only Wielbark Culture site is the cemetery at Sarnaki12 dated to phases B2/C1–C2; three settlements known from fieldwalking projects date to the Late Pre-Roman Period and the Roman Period (Chlebczyn I and II, Sarnaki XVI, Rozwadów II and XX)15, thus, most likely to belong to the Przeworsk Culture, while another one, located on the northern bank of the Bug, dates to the Late Roman Period (Wólka Nadbużna III)17, therefore should be attributed to the Wielbark Culture.
Contemporary entrepreneurship can be described in terms of high competition, globalization and rapid pace of change. The ability to meet expectations followed by global changes depends on the level of society economic awareness and the enterprising skills. The basic feature of the rural entrepreneurship is the vast context of its circumstances, especially close relations with the locals. However, the most important element influencing entrepreneurial activities is a person. The person with his intellect and creativity allows new solutions to be created. Antherfactor, which also influences entrepreneurship, is the condition of the environment. For the region, where the entrepreneurship development should play an important role, the education should be a starting point. Regional promotion of the entrepreneurial spirit and competence in education process is the basis of the promotion of entrepreneurial attitude towards educating individuals, social structures and organizations. Entrepreneurship is becoming a stabilizing factor that improves material situation of farmers and villagers resulting from initiating new economic activities both agricultural and non-agricultural. There is a need to stimulate and support the companies in rural areas. The aim of this article is to present the conditions and directions of development as well as to determine the opportunities and threats of entrepreneurship development with reference to education in rural areas in Podlasie region.
The article is inspired by Marcin Kącki’s reportage, Białystok. Biała siła czarna pamięć, which recovers the disturbing memory of Jewish population in Białystok and Podlasie region. The text aims at juxtaposing two theses. One, postulated by Kącki, claims that the local “failure” to remember does not stem from pre-war anti-semitism. The other, formulated by Tymothy Snyder, presupposes that placing a taboo on local Jewish past resulted from the fact that during the war the territory was subjugated to occupation by two military powers.
This article contains reflections on methods of creating the Belarussian national identity by Sokrat Janowicz, a Belarussian writer from Podlasie. Belarussian identity is treated as a kind of narrative strategy, which uses the authority of historicism and the principle of difference (in Derrida’s meaning). The inspiration of these considerations are H.K. Bhabha’s views on Postcolonialism, described in The Location of Culture. The introductory part of the article shows a short description of Belarussians as a national minority.
The article presents a set of sources connected with the Trzciniec culture settlement discovered in site 2 in Jeroniki, Choroszcz dis., Podlaskie Voivodeship During the research a very inspiring collection of materials associated with settlement was documented 29 immovable structures, plentiful pottery and flint material. An analysis of source dispersion allows for attempting a reconstruction of spatial organization and settlement structure during the older bronze epoch. Documented immovable structures constituted three relatively distinctive clusters which could be interpreted as homesteads and overlapping the spatial location of discovered pottery fragments. On the basis of a multi-aspect analysis of movable sources (primarily ceramic) the complex from Jeroniki should be associated with “classical” and/or “early-classical” stage of development Podlasie–Mazovia groups of the TC. They were also accompanied by “eastern” elements, as well as certain stylistic archaisms associated with the late stages of development of the Mierzanowice culture. One should, however, bear in mind the possibility of different dynamics in the development processes of the TC community in the north-eastern Poland. Tracking it would require studies based primarily on results of absolute dating. In this light, the presented materials could contribute to further analyses.
The subject of the Belarusian minority in Podlasie, in addition to references to sociology or economics, is primarily of a political nature. The notions of identity and changes referred to have primary character for the conducted argument. The first of them is identity, which allows to indicate the distinctive features of the discussed minority in relation to other groups and cultural conditions of the region. The second concept is a change that allows to trace the discrepancies and similarities that characterize the dynamics to which the social group under examination is subject. Among the determinants influencing the transformation of the Belarusian minority in Podlasie, three remain key: the physical environment, the organization of life in the economic and political dimension, and cultural factors, with particular emphasis on the importance of religion.

During the interwar period, in Siedlce, there functioned the Polish Army Gar-rison, which was the biggest in the Southern part of the Podlasie Region, as it numbered approximately 2000 soldiers. The presence of the soldiers of the 9th Infantry Division in the city contributed to the creation of close and strong relations between the army and the local community, developed in various areas. One of these, which significantly influenced the development of national awareness in the local community, was the festive celebration of public, national, and regimental holidays, where there were organised festive marches with an orchestra, parades, tournaments, academies, and dancing parties. The garrison commanders invited delegations of Siedlce residents to all celebrations held in the division. In the Second Polish Republic the most significant national holidays were the anniversaries: the adoption of the Con-stitution of the 3rd of May in 1791 and Poland's resumption of independent statehood on 11th November 1918. Other important public holidays were Jo-seph's name-day, celebrated on 19th March, and Polish Armed Forces Day, celebrated annually on 15th August. Other important anniversaries have also been celebrated, such as the creation of regiments, or the anniversaries of national uprisings. The celebration of military and national holidays played a major role in the patriotic and civic education of the soldiers of the Siedlce garrison, as well as civilian residents. The celebrations in 1939 had special significance, due to the increasing danger of being attacked by Nazi Germany.
In the years 1918-1939, trade constituted one of the main branches of economy. More people were employed in trade than in industry. The highest employment rate, however, was recorded in farming and crafts. The condition of the region depended entirely on the economic policy and the situation of the country. The trade plant network was characterized by irregular location. The majority of shops were located in not numerous towns, whereas in rural areas, which were populated by more than 80% of the inhabitants, shops were relatively rare. The sector structure showed superiority of shops, usually small or very small ones, selling foodstuffs. Another group of shops were stores selling clothes, footwear as well as materials. The interwar trade’s distinctive feature was also the nationality of shopkeepers, most of whom were Jewish.

W artykule przedstawiono zróżnicowany etnicznie i językowo proces osadnictwa zachodniej części dawnego Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego, dziś województwa podlaskiego, obejmującego ziemie w ramionach rzeki Narwi i jej lewego dopływu – rzeki Śliny. Najliczniej zasiedlili ten obszar Słowianie zachodni i wschodni, a w nieco mniejszym stopniu Litwini i Jaćwingowie. Magnaci i namiestnicy litewsko-ruscy podlegający Trokom – Glińscy, Radziwiłłowie i Gasztołdowie – przenosili do dóbr ziemskich i królewskich na Podlasiu Litwinów i Białorusinów ze swoich posiadłości na Litwie i nad Niemnem. Badania nad przynależnością językową i etniczną włościan oparto na analizie ortografii i etymologii antroponimów.

This paper presents the differing ethnic and linguistic character of the settlements of the western part of the former Lithuanian Grand-Duchy, today the Podlaskie Voivodeship, occupying the land between the river Narew and its tributary, the Ślina. The area was settled by Eastern and Western Slavs as well as Lithuanians. The basis of this research is the manuscript The Tykocin District Inventory of 1573, collated by Łukasza Górnicki, Starost of Tykocin, secretary, librarian and scribe to King Zygmunt August. On the basis of analysis of the record of the peasantry in 18 villages and farms of that district, a breakdown of the ethnic and linguistic composition of the area is given. The largest group were the Eastern and Western Slavs, with slightly fewer Lithuanians and Yotvingians. The Lithuanian-Russian governors under the authority of Trakai – the Glińskis, the Radziwiłłs and the Gasztołds – brought Lithuanians and Belarusians from their possessions in Lithuania and on the river Neman to the land and royal properties of Podlasie. Research on the ethnicity and language of the peasants is based on an analysis of the orthography and etymologies of anthroponyms.
Opinię taką podtrzymują podręczniki szkolne, a w świadomości ogółu występuje groźny i zdradliwy Tuchajbejowicz z sienkiewiczowskiej Trylogii. Do zmiany wizerunku Tatara polskiego dążyła w latach międzywojennych liczna grupa inteligencji tatarskiej. W niepodległej Rzeczypospolitej wielu Tatarów służyło w wojsku polskim, a wcześniej uczestniczyło w wojnie polskobolszewickiej. Czołowymi postaciami byli wówczas przedstawiciele rodów Achmatowiczów, Kryczyńskich, Romanowiczów i Sulkiewiczów.

Tatars in our country are perceived as strangers. This perception finds support in school textbooks, and popular imagination pictures them as threatening and treacherous Tuhay-Beys described by Sienkiewicz in this Trilogy. This image has not changed, even despite their continuous settlements in Poland, beginning in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the second half of the 14th century. Tatars from the eastern flanks of Poland would respond to every call from the Grand Duke of Lithuania, and later, from Polish kings, to defend their adopted homeland. In the interwar years many Tatars, i.e. numerous intelligentsia, including many laywers, strived to change the perception of Polish Tatar. Many Tatars served in the Polish army during Polish independence, and earlier had fought along Poles in the Polish-Soviet War. Central figures in those years were representatives of the Tatar families of Achmatowicze, Kryczyńscy, Romanowicze and Sulkiewicze.
The article concerns the issue of appropriate ownership of the Pokaniewo leasehold estate that was in possession of Katarzyna of the Niemira family, after the death of her first husband Bartłomiej Żychorski. The article is a complement to the Survey of Podlaskie Voivodeship of the Year 1602 issued in 2017.

The author of the article draws attention to the growing popularity of ,,new generation series” in Poland. He focuses primarily on the analysis of the series Raven. Whispers are heard after dark, which takes place in Podlasie region. Adamski analyzes this series in terms of how nature is portrayed in it and what role it plays, relative to the main character and the main plot of the narrative. In his analyzes, he starts from the metaphor of the Roman deity - Janus, and also refers to the aesthetics of Nordic Noir, which had a significant impact on the development of the Polish crime series. However, while the message of Scandinavian series has often been associated with social criticism, the narratives, whose places of action are located in the Polish province (a very important role of nature), more often have a metaphysical, ecological or mythological dimension.
The article discusses issues related to the research on modern rural cemeteries in Podlasie. The paper examines the results of a study of modern Podlasie cemeteries in the following localities: Dąbrówki, Kleosin, Koźliki, Mościcha, Nowodworce, Pajewo, Tykocin and Zbucz. In spite of incomplete information in various written and cartographic sources, rural cemeteries provide a starting point for investigating the regional funerary rites and rituals, they offer an opportunity to learn about the structure of the rural population, kinship of the buried individuals, the mortality of adults and adolescents, describe palaeopathology, and determine the economic and social status of the deceased.

W artykule poruszono zagadnienia związane z badaniami wiejskich cmentarzy nowożytnych na terenie Podlasia. W niniejszym tekście omówiono wyniki badań podlaskich nowożytnych cmentarzy w miejscowościach: Dąbrówki, Kleosin, Koźliki, Mościcha, Nowodworce, Pajewo, Tykocin i Zbucz. Mimo niepełnych informacji w różnych źródłach pisanych czy kartograficznych wiejskie cmentarze stanowią punkt wyjścia do zbadania regionalnej obrzędowości pogrzebowej i rytuałów, stwarzają możliwość poznania struktury populacji wiejskiej, pokrewieństwa pochowanych osobników, śmiertelności osób dorosłych oraz młodocianych, opisania paleopatologii a także określenia statusu ekonomiczno-społecznego zmarłych.
The aim of the article is to analyze the ethnic and linguistic identification of the Ukrainian-speaking population in the south-eastern part of the Podlaskie Voivodeship. This region is inhabited by the population of the Orthodox denomination, for whom the language spoken at home is Ukrainian (dialect). The article describes the ethnic and linguistic self-identifications of the older generation of the Podlasie residents. The author is interested in how the Ukrainian-speaking residents identify "their own" and "strangers", how they are identified by "strangers": the Polish-speaking majority and Belarusian-speaking minority, and how they themselves identify these groups of "strangers" and whether these identifications coincide. The material basis for the analyses is dialectological research carried out in Podlasie region.

Celem artykułu jest analiza identyfikacji etnicznej i językowej ukraińskojęzycznej ludności w południowo-wschodniej części województwa podlaskiego. Region ten zwarcie zamieszkuje ludność wyznania prawosławnego, dla której językiem kontaktów domowych jest język ukraiński (dialekt). W prezentowanym artykule opisano etniczne i językowe autoidentyfikacje starszego pokolenia mieszkańców Podlasia.
