The article presents the results of the PolSenior national survey on how elderly people perceive old age and how they prepare for it. According to the respondents old age usually starts when one’s health deteriorates (55,9%), when one becomes dependent on other people (49,5%) and also when a person loses his/her strength and becomes less active (46,2%). The major problems related to old age, identified by the subjects, are the following: illnesses, suffering (66,9%), disability and dependence on other people (63,2%) and loneliness (30,9%). The respondents identified the following actions they used to take or are taking now bearing in mind the time when they grow older: regular medical checkups (34,7%), building and maintaining good family relationships (32,8%), as well as leading a healthy lifestyle (30,6%). Such factors as gender, age and environment account for striking differences in opinions.

This article describes the family situation and caretaking needs of elderly people in the light of the quantitative research results. The author introduces various aspects of senior citizens family conditions in Poland, including their marital status, generational composition of families and their living situation. The next part of the article is devoted to caretaking needs. As the elderly people need help with their everyday activities, the author discusses the following issues: indicators of caretaking needs, size of the population that requires an assistance, role of family and state institutions in that respect.

PolSenior, the widest multidisciplinary research project, was conducted by the consortium of six research teams with researchers in the fields of medicine, biology, epidemiology, sociology, social policy, demography, economy and many other disciplines. The representative sample of 5695 participants aged 55–59 years (719 persons as the control group) and 65 years or more (4979 persons) gives the possibility not only to formulate a diagnosis about the health and social condition of the elderly in Poland. Another aim of this project was to assign priorities for the public administration and society for the formulation of basics of policy towards the elderly people. Each of the participants was visited three times. During the visit they answered different questions about medical and social aspects of their life. Also some tests concerning the mental and physical efficiency were conducted.
