This article presents the spatial disparities of demographic changes in the Polish Carpathians and compares them with the general demographic trends of the area in the 19th and 20th centuries. Small-area census records for towns and villages between 1869 and 1988 were collected by the author. These records provided data which disclosed new demographic phenomena and processes being formed in this region during the time considered. Using these newly discovered trends, a population redistribution model and a population development scenario for the 21st century are presented.

Geotourism is a type of qualified tourism promoting geosites related to the geological outcrops and relief elements, such as river channels. Examples of these landforms with high educational values can be seen in the Białka and Skawa riverbeds. However, an important element in the description of such geosites (geomorphosites) is their educational values, which make it possible to clearly determine their suitability and possible use in geotourism. The assessment methods are the only methods of evaluating these values. But they are subjective, and the results of the analyses carried out on them largely depend on the knowledge and experience of the evaluator. In this paper, four geomorphosites have been assessed using the triangulation expert method. All described geomorphosites have received a high educational value, and the highest had the Białka Gorge.

This paper discusses a fragment of a terra sigillata vessel discovered at site no. 47 in Stronie, Limanowa district, Poland – which constitutes a unique find in the area of northern slopes of the Polish Carpathians. It was found during a field survey conducted within the Beskid Wyspowy Mountains and in the Sącz Basin. The state of preservation of this artefact is probably indicative of a settlement as opposed to a burial context, as it does not bear any traces of burning. The fragment in question probably comes from the beaker of type Drag. 30. The presence of terra sigillata finds in the Polish Carpathians, most probably indicates the contacts between the Beskidy Mountains zone and the Danubian Roman provinces during the reign of the Severan dynasty.

Przedstawiono wyniki badań nad zmianami morfologicznymi dna koryta karpackiej rzeki Ropy spowodowanymi dużymi wezbraniami. Analizę oparto na wynikach pomiarów niwelacyjnych wykonanych w latach 2009 i 2010 w wybranych profilach poprzecznych koryta rzeki, zlokalizowanych powyżej ( 1 profil ) i poniżej ( 3 profile ) zbiornika retencyjnego Klimkówka. Wykorzystano także dane dotyczące stanów wody i przepływów Ropy w przekroju wodowskazowym Stacji Badawczej I G i P Z P A N w Szymbarku koło Gorlic. Zwrócono uwagę na możliwą rolę zbiornika Klimkówka w kształtowaniu morfologii koryta Ropy.

The article presents the results of research on morphological changes of the Carpathian river Ropa caused by high flood events. The analysis was based on the surveys of river cross-profiles located above ( 1 profile ) and below ( 3 profiles ) the Klimkówka Reservoir that were performed in 2009 and 2010. Data on the discharges and water stages of the Ropa River at the gauging station at Szymbark ( near Gorlice ) were also used in the study. Attention was paid to the possible role of the Klimkówka Reservoir in the transformation of the morphology of the Ropa River channel.

The development of ski resorts is the most important factor of socio-economic development of some countries and mountain regions. It contributes to the demographic growth and improves the quality of services and the infrastructure in the mountain locations. It is also an important source of employment and income of inhabitants as well as it creates the so-called “psychological stability” of people living in these areas. The aim of this article is to show, based on data obtained from the Local Data Bank of the Central Statistical Office, the impact of development of ski resorts on the socio-economic development of 16 municipalities, where the largest ski stations of the Polish Carpathians are located. The investigated municipalities differ significantly in terms of social and economic situation. This is reflected, among others, in the balance of migration, the level of unemployment, the level of entrepreneurship as well as the structure of business entities. Definitely those municipalities where ski tourism plays an essential role in the structure of their tourism function are in the best situation. There are mainly municipalities located in the Silesian Beskid and in the Podhale region. They are mostly characterized by positive migration balance, lower than the average level of unemployment for Poland and higher than the average level of entrepreneurship. The reverse features have the municipalities which are less developed for ski tourism, located in the Żywiecki Beskid, the Sądecki Beskid, the Pieniny Mountains and the Bieszczady Mountains.
