The Polish School of Medicine in Edinburgh, 1941–1949, was a unique academic establishment. Although located in Scotland it was governed by Polish academic regulations, conferred Polish degrees and most of the teaching was by Polish academic staff. In this article the author presents the historical background of the School, its activities and its impact on Scottish and Polish medicine.

Polska Szkoła Medyczna w Edynburgu w latach 1941–1949 była wyjątkowym ośrodkiem akademickim. Chociaż znajdował się on w Szkocji, podlegał polskim przepisom akademickim, nadawał polskie stopnie naukowe, a większość nauczania prowadzili polscy nauczyciele akademiccy. W artykule autor przedstawia tło historyczne szkoły, jej działalność oraz wpływ na szkocką i polską medycynę.

Poniższe listy dostarczają nowej wiedzy o okolicznościach, jakie w 1947 r. zmusiły prof. Antoniego T. Jurasza (1882-1961), wybitnego polskiego chirurga , bohatera września 1939 r., organizatora kliniki chirurgicznej w Poznaniu i dziekana Polskiego Wydziału Lekarskiego w Edynburgu do emigracji do USA i przyjęcia amerykańskiego obywatelstwa. Mając 61 lat, A. T. Jurasz musiał rozpocząć nowe życie. Listy pozwalają lepiej zrozumieć jego osobowość i powody, dla których na zawsze opuścił ojczyznę.

The following letters shed new light on circumstances under which in 1947 Prof. Antoni T. Jurasz (1882-1961), an outstanding Polish surgeon, hero of the Polish September of 1939, organizer of the surgical clinic in Poznań, and Dean of the Polish School of Medicine in Edinburg, decided to migrate to the U.S. and be naturalized. Although he was 61, A. T. Jurasz had to start a new life in America. The letters (mostly written by eminent English, American and Polish scientists) allow to better understand his personality and reasons for which he left Poland once and for all.
