This article looks into the representation of Polish immigrants in contempo-rary Dutch film, with a particular focus on the prominent role of domestic set-tings and familial dysfunctions in the pictures involved. As the analysis reveals, many of the films under discussion bring into view troubled Dutch protago-nists (especially men) who suffer from degradation in the familial and social sphere. The Polish characters in turn tend to be instrumentalized as (potential) agents of change (or rather “restoration”), taking up traditional familial and domestic roles that are no longer fulfilled by Dutch characters.

For that, we resort to the narratives of an immigrant of Polish origin, whose personal trajectory was irreversibly marked by the experience of compulsory recruitment, in the context of the Second World War.The recording of her life story resulted from a long interview conducted from the methodology of oral history, in which she provides important elements to reflect on the potential of autobiographical narratives in the exercise of reconstructing the past, whose images and representations emerge, always mediated for the interactive and inseparable relationship with the present time, in the dialectical movement between history and memory, remembrance and forgetfulness, silence and narrativity, saying and meaning.

The accommodation of children and young people of foreign descent to new life conditions and educational challenges abroad is a process that takes place primarily in the context of social interactions. The aim of the article below is to present selected experiences in terms of integrating schoolchildren of Polish origin in Germany. The author considers the presentation of school space as an integration microcosm of its own to be of particular importance. It is worth noting that the German educational system in the present form often discriminates againsts choolchildren of foreign descent and limits the opportunities for further education. The author’s own empirical verifications served as the research illustration in the text. The verifications, though carried out on a small sample, indicate some timeless trends among young Polish immigrants.

Norway is a country with a wealth of experience in the field of migratory movements. Specificity of the growing immigration stream into Norway in recent years lies in the fact that labor from the countries of the European Economic Area, particularly from the new EU member states, constitutes a dominant component of this stream. Poles are the largest immigrant group in Norway. Therefore, the article attempts to analyze the wave of Polish economic emigration to Norway following the accession to the European Union in the context of the influx of foreigners into the country in the last forty years. Shown is the scale of the phenomenon, the evolution of the emigration structure, with particular attention paid to sectors of the economy in which the immigrants are employed. Considered within this work are also the problems associated with occupational integration, working conditions and pay, the changing life conditions, as well as career and social aspects relevant to the Polish immigrants.

The article is a review of Kris Van Heuckelom’s 2019 book titled Polish Migrants in European Film 1918–2017, which is – as the title suggests –a comprehensive study of the representation of Polish migrants in over 150 European film productions from the interwar period up to contemporary times. The author discusses those films made in Western European countries, in which immigrants from Poland appeared, both as protagonists and as background characters, placing them in a wider social and historical context. The chapters into which the book is divided correspond with the periods of political changes which had an impact on who emigrated from Poland and why. The films analysed, belonging to a wide variety of genres, illustrate the evolving image of Polish migrants and their roles in the societies in which they found themselves.

O Estado do Paraná, localizado no sul do Brasil, recebeu milhares de imigrantes poloneses no final do século XIX e início do século XX.

The State of Paraná in southern Brazil received thousands of Polish immigrants in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Immigrants and their descendants maintained and cultivated Polish culture in the new land, exemplified in architecture, food, artistry, religious rites and the use of Slavic language. Bilingualism was and is still greatly practiced in the region and it is still the native language of many descendants. This current investigation comprises two layers of linguistic research developed by UNICENTRO researchers linked to the Nucleus of Slavic Studies (NEES). On the one hand, the structure of the Polish variety spoken in the region is investigated, comprising phonetic details through an acoustic analysis with the software PRAAT. The research demonstrates that the language is not precisely that spoken currently in Poland, but was brought by immigrants a century ago and which differentiated itself throughout time due to contact with the Portuguese language. On the other hand, we investigated the features of speech by descendants of immigrants from the theoretical perspective of Labov’s quantitative socio-linguistics for possible contributions of Slavic languages, Polish and Ukrainian, on Portuguese in the region mentioned above. A database of Linguistic Varieties of Slavic Speech has been elaborated (VARLINFE).
