W artykule zostały ukazane dzieje Petersburga jako ośrodka akademickiego przełomu XIX/XX wieku. Stolica Rosji była głównym centrum administracyjnym, przemysłowym i kulturalnym Imperium, a także jednym z największych i najsilniejszych ośrodków naukowo-uniwersyteckich w Europie. Pod koniec XIX wieku w mieście istniały 23 uczelnie wyższe, a w latach 1914-1915 ich liczba wzrosła do 35, natomiast liczba kształcących się studentów wynosiła blisko 42 tys. Nad Newą funkcjonowały liczne prestiżowe uczelnie wyższe. Największą z nich był założony w 1819 roku Cesarski Uniwersytet. Wśród pozostałych były między innymi uczelnie techniczne, wojskowe, medyczne, a także wiele innych instytucji naukowych i oświatowych o charakterze pozauniwersyteckim. Petersburg był także największym skupiskiem polskich studentów i wykładowców. Wielu z nich odegrało ważną rolę w rozwoju rosyjskiej i europejskiej nauki.

The paper presents the times of St. Petersburg as the academic center at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The capital city of Russia was at that time the hub of administration, industry and culture of the Empire as well as one of the most vibrant academic and university centers in Europe. At the end of 19th century there were 23 universities and this figure increased to 35 in 1914-1915 and the number of student reached as many as 42 thousand. Numerous and prestigious academic institutions were operating at the Neva River and the greatest of them was St. Petersburg Emperor’s University. Other universities included, among the others, technical, military, medical schools, as well as many other scientific and educational institutions of non-university status. St. Petersburg gathered one of the greatest group of Polish students and lecturers, many of whom played an important role in the development of Russian and European science.
