Andrei Sheptyts’kyi has been the object of interests of scholars in Poland of both Polish and Ukrainian origin. Polish studies on metropolitan Andrei Sheptyts’kyi have begun form publications of historical sources. Th ey have been prepared by scholars who have performed fi rst analysis of facts connected with his life and activity. Th e most important Polish researches on metropolitan started aft er 1989/1990. Since then a number of monographies concentrating on various aspects of his activity have been prepared. However, a majority of Polish publications on the topic have been single papers each dealing with a particular problem of Sheptyts’kyi’s life and thought. Th ose have rarely been continued by their authors. Further research on metropolitan requires more eff ective cooperation between Polish and Ukrainian historians in order to propose the most complementary picture of Sheptyts’kyi’s personality.

The paper shows the relevance of contrastive perspective not only for linguistic research but also, above all, for linguistic disciplines operating and evolving in different geographical areas. The latter platform of comparison is here called interlinguistic contrastivity. The point of reference for the discussion is text linguistics in German and Polish language studies. The focus is mainly on terminological differences with respect to the name of the discipline and concerning the research in the field of text type studies (Textsortenlehre). It is, moreover, pointed out that the first phase of development of the discipline in question, identified in text linguistics in German language studies, has no exact counterpart in Polish language research. The source of these differences is primarily research tradition and dissimilar attitude towards structuralism.

The paper presents an outline of topics under research in contrastive text linguistics in Polish and German studies, the development phases of the discipline in question as well as postulates for the future. It is noticed that Polish specialists in the field of German studies avail themselves in their contrastive research mainly of the specialized literature by German-language (neo-)philologists. They also publish their research results in German thus contributing to the German-language specialized literature. As a consequence Polish text linguists can familiarize themselves with the afore-mentioned research results only to a limited degree. As for the scope of research, in contrastive linguistics one can observe increased focus on the comparison of various text genres as well as a turn towards the analysis of discourse.

The paper gives an overview of the history and present-day status of Polish studies at St Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia and discusses several key aspects of Polish cultural presence in contemporary Bulgaria. It explains the specific structure of Polish philology studies at the University in the light of the country’s modern educational system and highlights the most prominent scholars that have shaped the prestige of this particular branch of Slavistics. Apart from academic research and educational achievements, another factor playing a significant role in present-day Polish-Bulgarian cultural dialogue is the Polish Institute in Sofia. The paper demonstrates how positive attitudes towards Poland and its cultural heritage have substantially influenced the reception of prominent Poles in Bulgaria. The cases of Lech Wałęsa, pope John Paul II and Czesław Miłosz reveal a tendency to idealize their legacy due to the need of public values lacking in Bulgarian society.

Polish studies in Lithuania after World War IIThe history of academic Polish in Lithuania after the Second World War was largely dependent on historical and political circumstances, therefore, it can be divided into two periods: Polish studies in the Soviet Lithuania (1961–1989) and Polish studies in the independent Lithuania (1990–2010). The purpose of this article is to characterize didactic, scientific and popularizing activity of the two centers – Department of Polish Philology and Didactics, which exists at Vilnius Pedagogical University since 1961, and Centre of Polish Studies at Vilnius University, which was established in 1993. Description of Polish academic researches seeks to distinguish main directions of the carried out researches and present most significant achievements of Polish academicians in Vilnius. Particular attention is paid to linguistic issues, where the dominant role is played by the studies of dialectologic and sociolinguistic nature.

A Polish scholar, literary critic, university lecturer, theatre lover, great organiser and speaker, an associate of a number of scholarly journals and newspapers, a man of impeccable manners, and patriot, Marian Szyjkowski undoubtedly stands out as one of the most outstanding examples of the Polish-Czech research co-operation, or even of a much wider ‘mission – to bring both nations closer to each other‘. Szyjkowski‘s life began in Lviv, then the capital of Galicia of an autonomous era. The atmosphere of his family home, the Polish-language high school and an extremely high level of university studies were a formative infl uence on Szejkowski. Next came Kraków, with its Jagiellonian Library, subsequent degrees, signifi cant publications, PAU (the Polish Academy of Learning) membership. His life nevertheless took the main turn when Szyjkowski became the Head of a newly established Department of Polish Language and Literature at Charles University in Prague.

Being a private form of communication, personal letters are usually not written to be published. The act of their publication, therefore, may be considered as somewhat voyeuristic. However, since the authors of the correspondence in this contribution – Julije Benešić and Zdenka Marković – are two public figures of great importance not only in Croatian literary and cultural context, but also in the promotion of Croatian Polish studies as well as intercultural relations between Croatia and Poland in the first half of the twentieth century, we believe that its printing is justified. Their correspondence may be considered as an interesting addition to the facts about their lives and work that can be found in different research papers and books published so far, providing insight in the inner world of thoughts and emotions they shared.

Henryk Markiewicz, one of the greatest Polish humanists of the 20th and 21st centuries, died on 31 October 2013 in Kraków. His huge legacy includes writings dealing with bibliological themes, concerning the history of literature, literary life, perception of literary works, and their formal, in-cluding material, aspect, i.e. books themselves. In addition, there are several theoretical and practical articles dealing with editing and relating to various editorial projects encompassing fiction, criticism and historiography, as well as theory of literature. Markiewicz is also the author of humorous works published in the form of occasional bibliophilic prints. Henryk Markiewicz amassed a huge book collection, which he used in his work but which was also a source of constant pleasure for him. He compiled it passionately, systematically and painstak-ingly. As a result, he built up a humanistic collection of forty-five thousand books, which, along-side an almost complete set of works dealing with Polish studies, contained foreign publications as well as selected publications devoted to related disciplines. This collection as well as the scholar’s substantial archive was bought already during his lifetime by the Pomeranian Library in Szczecin.

Chiński projekt „Jeden pas i jeden szlak” wzmocnił współpracę pomiędzy Państwem Środka a Polską, co w ostatnich latach wywołało wśród chińskich uczelni ogromne zainteresowanie językiem i kulturą polską.
