The aim of this article is to discuss the selected written and non-written documents related to Poland, available in the Library of Congress. The documents that are fully or partially digitized and presented on the website of the Library of Congress have been chosen. The following polonica are characterized: “Polish Declarations of Admiration and Friendship for the United States”, “Ledger listing in handwriting persons registered at the Polish consulate in Shanghai, 1934–1941…, and also Polish address and telephone books, as well as examples of “independent publications”, i.e. newsletters, magazines, declarations, newspapers, books and leaflets published in the country in the years 1976–1990. In addition, a few publications written and published by the library are described. The article ends with a summary and conclusions.
The objective of this paper is to present and summarize the achievements of Polish researchers in recording Poland’s cultural heritage. It also presents the current state of research on recording Polonica outside Poland. A search in library catalogues and internet sources was made for this purpose and on its basis a bibliographic specification including catalogues of Polonica published within the last 150 years was prepared. The main thesis of the paper is that research is conducted in an unsystematic, chaotic manner, which was documented throughout this search. This important issue has not yet been duly examined. Even the bibliography of the subject has not been drawn up. The subsequent parts of the paper discuss geographical directions towards which interests of Polish researchers recording Polonica turn, institutions undertaking such projects, and present conclusions and bibliography of catalogues of Polonica in chronological order.
To wspólne dziedzictwo pamięci historycznej świadczy o długiej przynależności Polski do europejskiej wspólnoty.

The Polish-Italian contacts have a long history. From the very Middle Ages, when Polish scholars started to study in Italian universities, they centered around science and education. In the subsequent ages the mutual contacts also included the artistic field, when Polish artists used to go to Italy to master their skills with the best teachers. From the end of the 18th century to the mid-20th century the cooperation also included the military, social-political and economic aspects. In Italy Poles took part in the struggle for independence leading to the Union of Italy ( the Risorgimiento period), and later in the fights during both world wars. Since the mid-20th century Italy and Poland have maintained bilateral contacts in various fields. In all those periods the Polish presence in Italy was recorded in written, iconographic and artistic sources. Most of them are preserved in archives and libraries in Rome – the centre of European science, culture and Christianity. It was not until the 20th century, when the first scientific Polish institutions were set up in Rome, that it became possible to register, compile and sort out Polonicas found in Rome’s libraries, archives, cultural institutions, and private collections. Written monuments indicate a number of associations both in the sacrum and profanum spheres. The common heritage of historical memory is the evidence of Poland’s belonging to the European community for a long time.

The article consists of three parts: 1. The history of reception of the works of Adam Naruszewicz in Russia in the years 1788–1819 (“Moskovskyi zhurnal”, “Ukrainskyi vestnik” etc.); 2. The classification and description of the materials about Naruszewicz in the Vassily Anastasyevitch’s periodical “Uley” in the years 1811–1812 (the biography, the notes to the translation of the “History of the Polish Nation”, the references to the “History of the Polish Nation” in the work of Maxim Berlinski); 3. The conclusions and perspectives of the research (Faddey Bulharyn, Jakov Galinkovski etc.).
The authors present the characteristics of Jesuit libraries in the Kingdom of Hungary in terms of their content, with special focus on works by the most influential Jesuit authors, which were among the most numerous ones in Hungarian Jesuit libraries. The authors also draw attention to the most popular titles published by the Hungarian Jesuits in the 17th century, which can be considered bestsellers of Baroque Catholic literature not only in the Kingdom of Hungary, but also abroad. Many of them also found their readers in Poland and were translated into Polish. Furthermore, the authors point to the interconnection between Hungarian and Polish Jesuit book culture and the Jesuit Polonica in Hungarian Jesuit libraries and typographies of the 17th-18th century. The Hungarian book culture does not mean the book culture of contemporary Hungary, but of Kingdom of Hungary. This paper focus on the Jesuits from the Slovak territory, which was a part of Kingdom of Hungary for 800 years (from 11th century to 1918). The essential research sources are the international educational program Ratio Atque Institutio Studiorum Societatis Jesu and catalogues of Hungarian Jesuit libraries, located in Slovakia, from the years 1632–1782.
The article discusses selected issues related to the work on the national Polish retrospective bibliography. A short historical outline of the changes in understanding of the term “Polonicum” is presented (chiefl y, with respect to the fundamental bibliography of the Polish literature, i.e. the Bibliografia by K. Estreicher). The author provides the defi nition of the term “Polonicum,” currently accepted in the Polish bibliographic practice, and the rules of selecting materials to be included in the national bibliography. While discussing individual criteria (territorial, national, thematic, and linguistic) H. Mieczkowska brings forth instances of writings from the period ranging from 16th to 18th century that demonstrate the diffi culties, which arise from applying the aforementioned rules in picking out the Polonica. 21-30

W artykule zreferowano problemy związane z tworzeniem polskiej retrospektywnej bibliografii narodowej.
Prof. Edward Potkowski, died on July 31st 2017, paid particular attention to registration and detailed documentation of the manuscripts - created in Poland, written by the Poles abroad, for the Polish readers, or being held within the territory of Poland - both in Polish and foreign collections. He used to say, that we would not develop a complete image of the book culture of medieval ages in Poland without studies on the books permanently or temporarily stored in foreign institutions. This is also the topic of E. Potkowski’s text offered within this volume. He discusses examples of three books: the Mikołaj Suled’s Codex he found himself in Naples (Italy), the Mathilda’s Codex, and the Sankt Florian Psalter. Their complicated history proves the need of developing a central catalogue of medieval manuscripts related to Poland, for further studies on the Polish medieval culture.

Due to the common past, rooted in the multi-ethnic and multi-lingual Polish-Lithu- anian Commonwealth, it’s natural to see the presence of many Polonica in the Belarusian collections. They have been revealed during works on a complete bibliographical catalogue of printed books in Belarus (from 1517), and bibliographical register of book monuments. Therefore, research areas the Polish and Belarusian book scientists overlap quite frequently, influencing positively team and project work, actively pursued since the 90’s of the 20th century. The paper presents many examples of individual and institutional studies, resulting in registration of historical book collections, including valuable Polonica. These effects enable indication of problems and trends in future common projects.

The National Library of France (Bibliothèque nationale de France) holds one of the richest and the most valuable collections of Polonica outside of Poland. The Polonica in the sense established by Karol Estreicher include manuscripts, incunabula, books periodicals, prints, maps, music and numismatics. Materials from the 16th to 18th century reflect the history of diplomatic relationship between France and Poland, from the election of Henri de Valois on the Polish throne in 1573 to the period of the partitions of Poland. During the 19th and 20th centuries France experienced the successive waves of Polish immigrants for both political and economic reasons. Consequently the amount of Polish diaspora writings expanded and they entered the National Library of France as the legal deposit. The Polish section was founded in 1951. Its fundamental mission remains to continue to develop the collection of Polonica by purchase, exchange and gift, and to catalogue and promote them. In the framework of partnership between the French and the Polish National Libraries the portal of digital documents France – Pologne (France-Poland) launched in September 2017 presents the wealth and the diversity of Polonica in the National Library of France.

Francuska Biblioteka Narodowa (Bibliothèque nationale de France) posiada jeden z najbogatszych i najcenniejszych zbiorów poloników znajdujących się poza granicami Polski. Polonika, rozumiane w sensie estreicherowskim, obejmują rękopisy, inkunabuły, druki zwarte i ciągłe, ryciny, mapy, muzykalia, numizmatykę. Na przestrzeni XIX i XX w. kolejne fale polskiej emigracji politycznej i ekonomicznej do Francji sprzyjały rozwojowi piśmiennictwa polonijnego i emigracyjnego.
The British Library has collaborated with the National Library of Poland, Jagiellonian Library and the Kórnik Library within the international project called The Polish Short Title Catalogue. It aims to produce a catalogue of Polish old prints held in the BL collections. The respective stages of the project took place in Warsaw, Krakow and London. The work on the catalogue involved the enhancement and upgrading of the existing BL records in accordance with the current bibliographic standards. Although the Polonica collection contains only slightly over 2000 items, it covers a wide range of topics which reflect the intellectual, cultural, political and religious life of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It includes many rare items such as the „Łaski’s Statues”, works by Mikołaj Rej, Matthias of Miechow, early printed Bibles, Socinian literature and classics of the Polish Enlightenment.

W realizacji międzynarodowego projektu zatytułowanego The Polish Short Title Catalogue, mającego na celu opracowanie katalogu starodruków polskich znajdujących się w zbiorach Biblioteki Brytyjskiej, uczestniczyły trzy instytucje krajowe: Biblioteka Narodowa w Warszawie, Biblioteka Jagiellońska i Biblioteka Kórnicka. Poszczególne etapy projektu realizowano w Warszawie, Krakowie i Londynie. Prace nad katalogiem obejmowały meliorację istniejących rekordów bibliograficznych w celu korekty i uzupełnienia zawartych w nich informacji według aktualnie obowiązujących norm. Kolekcja poloników, choć niewielka (nieco ponad 2000 woluminów), wyróżnia się dużą rozpiętością tematyczną, odzwierciedlającą życie umysłowe, kulturalne, polityczne i religijne dawnej Rzeczypospolitej. Zawiera rzadkie druki od krakowskich inkunabułów poprzez tzw. „Statuty Łaskiego”, dzieła Mikołaja Reja, Macieja z Miechowa, staropolskie edycje Biblii, druki ariańskie po utwory klasyków literatury stanisławowskiej.
The paper discusses the collection of Polonica printed from the 15th to 18th century, held by various New York research libraries. Polish-subject materials are owned by several academic libraries, such as the Columbia University Library, the Union Theological Seminary Library, the General Theological Seminary Library and the New York Academy of Medicine. Small number of titles can be found among the holdings of the Hispanic Society of America, the Brooklyn Public Library and in the New York Historical Society. The New York Public Library is the owner of the largest collections of Polish materials in the New York area. Valuable and rare editions issued in Cracow, among them incunabula and early books from the 16th century, have been collected by the Morgan Library & Museum. A number of books acquired by the Morgan Library came from some outstanding Polish scattered collections. All of these books represent various fields of science, history and Old Polish literature, natural and legal sciences, and theology with a rich collection of reformation and counter-reformation literature. Many of them were written by well-known Polish authors, including Stanisław Hozjusz, Marcin Kromer, Mikołaj Kopernik (Nicolaus Copernicus), Wawrzyniec Goślicki and Jan Heweliusz (Johannes Hevelius).

W artykule omówiono kolekcje poloników wydanych w XV-XVIII w. przechowywane w bibliotekach naukowych Nowego Jorku. Największy ich zespół posiada Biblioteka Publiczna (New York Public Library). Spośród bibliotek uniwersyteckich wartościowy zbiór poloników znajdziemy w księgozbiorach bibliotek Uniwersytetu Columbia (Columbia University Libraries). Znacznie mniejsze kolekcje, liczące od kilku do kilkudziesięciu woluminów, posiadają inne uczelniane książnice: General Theological Seminary Library oraz Biblioteka Akademii Medycznej Nowego Jorku (New York Academy of Medicine). Niewielkie zespoły lub pojedyncze egzemplarze można odnaleźć również w Bibliotece Publicznej Brooklynu (Brooklyn Public Library) i w księgozbiorach towarzystw naukowych lub fundacji, m.in. w Bibliotece Towarzystwa Hiszpańskiego (Hispanic Society of America) oraz w zbiorach Nowojorskiego Towarzystwa Historycznego (New York Historical Society). Wartościowe i rzadkie polonika, w tym kilkanaście inkunabułów i wczesnych druków z XVI w. oficyn krakowskich, zgromadziła Biblioteka Morgana (Morgan Library & Museum, dawniej Pierpont Morgan Library). W nowojorskich placówkach znajdziemy publikacje z różnych dziedzin wiedzy: historii i literatury staropolskiej, teologii (z bogatą kolekcją druków reformacyjnych i kontrreformacyjnych), nauk przyrodniczych i prawnych.

Gottfried Lengnich, a historian and lawyer who lived in Gdańsk in the 18th century left behind a collection of over 4,000 books. The collection was sold during two auctions in July and November 1774. Auction registers found in the State Library in Berlin – the Foundation of the Prussian Cultural Heritage – are available on-line. Owing to Lengnich’s academic interests, the collection includes 600 Polonicas, the majority of which are works concerning history, law and politics. The analysis of this fragment of Lengnich’s collection shows that it includes the majority of the most significant Polish and foreign authors writing about the history and law of Poland and Prussia.

Professor Jerzy Starnawski (1922–2012) was a historian of literature, bibliographer and author of over one-thousand works published in 1948–2013. The article examines those of Starnawski’s writings that stemmed from his ceaseless interest in books, his constant contact with them and his studies of them during countless houres spent in libraries, even during brief visits to various towns. Starnawski was passionate about finding, documenting, describing and editing, especially previously unknown works, though he also studied remnants of works by Polish authors and information about Poland that disseminated outside the country. On the other hand, Starnawski’s teaching experiences led to the publication of comprehensive works introducing Polish language and literature scholars (and not only them) to bibliography and providing an overview of works dealing with the history of literature. Bibliography and history of book studies were subjects to which he devoted not only a separate publication but also a number of treatises and articles. In addition, he initiated and, to a large extent, edited 10 volumes of the Słownik badaczy literatury polskiej (Dictionary of Polish literature scholars), which is largely a biographical dictionary of book scholars.
The paper presents calendars published by the one of the oldest Polish diaspora organizations in the USA – the Polish National Alliance (PNA) of the United States of North America – in Chicago. The calendars were originally released in the form of books in 1910-1922, and later, 1991-2016, as wall calendars. The subject of discussion and analysis are the issues from the turn of 20th and 21st century. Only the contents of the calendars together with their formal and editorial elements have been reviewed. The described calendars come from the Author’s private collection. Card almanacs were intended for activists of the PNA and were published as supplements to the weekend issues of the „Polish Daily News” at the end of each year. The covered topics included: Polish people in the life and history of America, the history and the present situation of Poland, and various forms of PNA activities in the Polish and American communities. This way, not only the alliance was promoted, but first of all, the Polish national heritage abroad. Outside of Chicago, other Polish calendars, which are mentioned in the paper, are also published. The other Polish calendars mentioned in the paper are also published beyond Chicago.

W artykule omówiono kalendarze polonijne wydawane na terenie Chicago przez jedną z najstarszych organizacji polskiej diaspory w Stanach Zjednoczonych – Związek Narodowy Polski (Polish National Alliance of the United States of North America). Zaprezentowane kalendarze pochodzą z prywatnej kolekcji Autorki.
The most serious losses in Polish written heritage occurred during the Polish- -Swedish wars in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. During each of the three war campaigns the Swedes plundered and took out to Sweden the Polish church (monastery, cathedral or capitular) libraries as well as secular ones, including book collections belonging to Polish kings (Sigismund II Augustus and Sigismund III Vasa). Owing to the Polish endeavors, the 1660 Peace of Oliwa contained a clause that ensured the return of the seized Polish cultural assets but it was not implemented in practice. Consequently, the Polish scholars faced the task of seeking and registering the Polish possessions kept in Swedish book collections. The measures undertaken in this area in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries showed the wealth, diversity and value of the books belonging to Polish written heritage but they covered only a part of it. It is therefore necessary to continue research of this kind, which will enable more thorough knowledge of different aspects of the history of book culture in Poland. They will be also a significant source for historical-bibliological, literature-science, science of science, and similar studies.

Studia te będą też istotnym wkładem do rozważań historyczno-bibliologicznych, literaturoznawczych, naukoznawczych, muzykologicznych i innych.
The article (based on the queries carried out in the last decade) presents the remarks on the status of works of Polish bookbinders (and foreign bookbinders who have worked on the Polish lands) since the Middle Ages to the 1st half of the 20th century. The discussed works are kept in libraries and museums as well as in private collections in Europe and the United States. In particular, it refers to institutions that keep the greatest amount and/ or the most valuable Polish bindings (especially Russia, Sweden, Germany and France). Particular attention is paid to the circumstances – often dramatic – in which those works became a part of foreign collections in the course of the centuries. The author on the one hand discusses evaluation of advancements in identification/inventory of those works provided by foreign and Polish researchers, and on the other outlines the research perspectives concerning this characteristic category of Polonica.

Wyniki kwerendy z lat 2006-2008 opublikowane zostały w 2009 r. Natomiast wyniki prac z lat 2009-2015 ogłoszono pod koniec 2016 r. Artykuł prezentujący rezultaty wzmiankowanych działań oraz różnorakie doświadczenia i wnioski z nich płynące, stanowi niejako podsumowanie programu MKiDN. Ponadto zawarto w nim próbę wytyczenia kierunków dalszych prac rejestracyjnych i pola bardziej szczegółowych badań.

Political changes which have been started in the beginning of the ’90 resulted negative way on the situation of Polish collections abroad. Department for the Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad [presently: Department of Cultural Heritage Abroad and Wartime Losses] of Ministry of Culture and National Heritage noticed this increasing trend and launched in 2006 the Programme „Registration of the Polish Collections Abroad – with special consideration for our threatened heritage”, which was connected with previous efforts directed on creating the directory on Polish libraries abroad in the period 1938-1948 (published: 2005). The main purpose of the Programme „Registration of the Polish Collections Abroad...” became collecting information on the Polish written heritage abroad, dispersed, very often not known and forgotten, and – specifically in recent years – endangered. The results of the query from the period 2006-2008 were published in 2009, whereas the results of the similar efforts from the period 2009-2015 were published in the end of 2016. The paper presents the activities mentioned above and their conclusions and is meant on the one hand to somehow summarize the Programme of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and on the other to set the directions for the future registration efforts and fields of the more detailed research.
K.A. Timiriaziewa na Ukrainie. Pozostałości po tych kolekcjach liczą w sumie około 5100 tomów w językach: polskim, francuskim, rosyjskim, niemieckim, angielskim, łacińskim i ukraińskim (kolejność według liczebności).

The article covers personal book collections belonging to the Poles residing in the Eastern part of the Podilla province, then nationalized by Soviet authorities in 1919-1920, and currently reposited in library stocks of the Vinnytsia Regional General-Purpose Scien- tific Library named after K.A. Timiriazev. There are about 5100 volumes in Polish, French, Russian, German, English, Latin and Ukrainian languages (listed in a decreasing order of books quantity) altogether. The editions were printed in the territory of Poland and other European countries in the 16th – the turn of the 20th century. The books came from eight family libraries of manor houses as well as from 45 personal collections. The available library stock makes it possible to characterize composition of the collections, the Poles’ interests and everyday life habits associated with books, as well as the role books played in the process of national identity formation.
