A person employed on a temporary basis gains new possibilities, but also encounters psychological difficulties. They can be particularly burdensome if this form of employment was not the preferred one. The character of temporary employment consists in emotional and cognitive effort resulting from the necessity of cyclic adjustment to new conditions, entering into important interpersonal relationships and then breaking them off in order to begin the entire cycle again. This article aims at analyzing psychological threats associated with temporary employment. A questionnaire survey conducted among employees employed by a temporary job agency was supposed to show the most important stress sources in this kind of employment. The likelihood of burnout syndrome was also analyzed.
The changing environment forces companies to take various adaptive actions which could increase their chances of surviving and becoming successful. These actions must involve human resources management, too. Using flexible forms of employment is becoming one of the trends in this field. Amongst these forms temporary work deserves particular attention. The aim of this article is to present basic features of temporary work, with pointing out its advantages and drawbacks, and also to show the scale of development of this form of employment in Poland.
