Man, curious about the world, learns about the surrounding reality in various ways. In exploring knowledge of reality, he uses his senses and intellect. For centuries, it was believed that all data that the intellect possesses is delivered to him through the senses. It is obvious that we receive most news from the world around us through the sense of sight and hearing. However, this does not change the fact that the other senses, that is, smell, touch and taste, play a significant role in our everyday lives and in exploring the reality around us. Following this thinking and focusing on the sense of smell, it can be concluded that we can try to learn about the world by smelling it. In the following article I describe the role of fragrances in the poetry of Propercius. For the sake of maintaining a certain methodological order, at the beginning I introduce the figure of a Roman poet. Then, I briefly comment the translation into Polish, which is my direct source for work. Next, I point to individual examples of the functioning of the fragrance category in the work of the said author. After analyzing the mentioned fragments, I allow myself to make a certain synthesis and draw conclusions.

Propertius, one of the most important poets of the Augustan Age, referred sometimes to Roman politics. One of the issues he covered in 2nd, 3rd and 4th book of his elegies was Romano-Parthian relations. The Augustan propaganda exploited the topic of revenge for the defeat of Carrhae in 53 BC and forecasted the conquest of the Arsacid monarchy. The poets of this age also referred to the Roman policy towards Parthia. In paper it was shown how in the course of time Propertius’ attitude to Parthian topics changed and how the image of Parthians was influenced by the current political situation.

Propercjusz, jeden z najważniejszych poetów epoki augustowskiej, sięgał nieraz w swoich utworach do tematyki politycznej. Jednym z wątków poruszanych przez niego w II, III i IV księdze elegii są stosunki rzymsko-partyjskie. Propaganda augustowska wykorzystywała temat zemsty za klęskę pod Carrhae w roku 53 przed Chr. i zapowiadała podbój monarchii Arsakidów. Poeci tej epoki również nawiązywali do rzymskiej polityki wobec Partów. W artykule pokazano, jak na przestrzeni lat zmieniało się podejście Propercjusza do tematyki partyjskiej i jak na obraz Partów wpływała aktualna sytuacja polityczna.

The article describes the undertaken semiotic analysis of space in elegy II 26a of Properius both at the level of textual events (narrative) and at the level of poem composition. Referring to the Propertian inspiration by visual arts (M. Hubbard), the author uses the concept of an ekphrastic technique of space composition to show the function of the “border” motif in a liminal and transgressive space model as well as interpersonal relations. In result the author concludes that the above-mentioned levels of poetic images and the composition of the text are connected by a transgressive figure of the subject, able to cross the boundary created between the “story of a dream” and the narrator–reader (or listener) relationship. This leads to the argument that elegy II 26a is a form of monodrama with the central figure of the subject–actor, who, like a angellos in the drama, simultaneously operates in the “stage” space of the narrator–recipient relation and the space of textual fiction.

W artykule została podjęta semiotyczna analiza przestrzeni w elegii II 26a Propercjusza na poziomie wydarzeń tekstowych (narracyjność) oraz na poziomie kompozycji utworu. Odwołując się do malarskich inspiracji poety (M. Hubbard), autor posługuje się koncepcją ekfrastycznej techniki kompozycji przestrzeni do ukazania funkcji motywu „granicy” tak w liminalnym i transgresyjnym modelu przestrzeni, jak i relacjach interpersonalnych. Ostatecznie autor konkluduje, że powyższe poziomy obrazów poetyckich i kompozycji tekstu łączy transgresyjna postać podmiotu, zdolnego do przekraczania wykreowanej w strukturze tekstu granicy między „opowieścią o śnie” a relacją narrator–odbiorca. Prowadzi to do postawienia tezy, że elegia II 26a jest formą monodramu z centralną postacią podmiotu–aktora, który niczym postać angellosa w dramacie, funkcjonuje jednocześnie w „scenicznej” przestrzeni relacji narrator–odbiorca i fabularnej przestrzeni opowieści.

The purpose of this article is to determine the function of one of the minor literary motifs present in the Roman literature of the Augustan period, i.e., the motif of the perfumed and wealthy Arab and fragrant and rich Arabia. This goal is achieved here in two steps: first, the appropriate source material is compiled, and then the material is analysed and the conclusions are formulated. The source material in this case is seventeen extracts from Virgil, Horace, Tibullus, Pseudo-Tibullus, Propercius and Ovid. These fragments were divided into those, in which the respective fragrance motif was embedded in the axiological context (sixteen fragments), and those, in which the motif appears in the neutral context (one fragment). Among the first there were separated those, in which the positive axiological context is dealt with (ten fragments), and those, in which the negative axiological context is dealt with (six fragments). The fragments of the first type mention the value of a woman (four fragments), religious activities (three fragments), the Roman land (two fragments) and peace (one fragment), while the fragments of the second type express the worthlessness of wealth (five fragments) and remoteness from the loved person (one fragment). In turn, the analysis was carried out in two steps. First, it was found that Latin poets and writers of the Augustan period use the fragrance motif when they value, whether positively or negatively, people or things or situations, or activities, and that these writers use the motif discussed here to build images that appeal to the public. Secondly, it was established that the Arabic motif is expressed at the same time in a lot of different words, should all the fragments in which it appears, be taken together, and in few words, should each of the fragments should be considered separately.
