In this article will be analyzed school files, which are archived in the diocesan archives on the territory of the former Prussian partition: Archives of the Archdiocese of Poznan, Gniezno Archdiocesan Archives and Archives of the Diocese in Pelplin. The choice of research materials dependends on understanding the concept of „territory of the Prussian partition.” In my view, it is the area that was on the board of the Prussian authorities as a result of partitions of Poland, and not, as in the case of the diocese of Warmia and the diocese of Wrocław as a result of the wars of succession and international agreements. The issue of an acts of church schools in the diocesan archives on the territory of the former Prussian partition is a section of research on the education of the Catholic Church in Poland. It also determine the direction of further analysis of archival materials in this field. It introduces a researcher at the issue of scientific and educational programs, private institutions, including the Church, and to compare them with common state programs.

W niniejszej pozycji analizie poddane zostaną akta szkół zarchiwizowane w zasobach archiwów diecezjalnych na byłym terytorium zaboru pruskiego: Archiwum Archidiecezjalnego w Poznaniu, Archiwum Archidiecezjalnego w Gnieźnie i Archiwum Diecezjalnego w Pelplinie.
The article deals with the problem of demographic changes that take place in thefamilies living in towns of the Prussian partition in the 19th century and at the beginningof the 20th. The most important populational parameters have been presented; on the basisof these parameters it is possible to observe trends and the directions of changes, whichare part of a much wider, pan-European process of demographic transformation. Theresearch has been carried out on the basis of the information concerning a few towns ofthe Prussian partition (Toruń, Poznań, Gdańsk, Elbląg, Starogard, Chojnice, Chełmża).A special attention has been paid to a decreasing age of newlyweds, disappearing barriersfor mixed (interfaith) marriages, loosening of social and professional requirements, andweakening of the territorial barrier while choosing the spouse. The fact worth noticing isthat the interval between the day of birth and the day of baptism was longer than before.Other facts that are of interest are: a decrease of the rate of birth/mortality, as well asof the coefficient of births and deaths at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Anothersphere that has been researched is the value of infant mortality, quite high in the 19thcentury and slowly diminishing afterwards. A combination of civilisational processes, mental changes of human beings and changes in their customs had a decisive impact onthe shape and size of the family. It was the beginning of essential transformations, whichare still taking place now and keep influencing the demographic situation of the population. The article also contains a proposal of further demographic research on the Jewishfamily in the towns of the Prussian partition, because that subject is often omitted. In theend, some new directions of research have been suggested and an introductory literaturehas been given, too.
A great landed estate is defined as a farmstead of a minimum area of 100 hectares, operating either as an independent enterprise or owned by the gentry or wealthy middle class. The functioning of such landed estates (in Germany and under the Prussian partition known as Rittergüter) was closely linked to the ownership structure of past times, when private ownership of land entailed a number of privileges and a high social prestige. The Poznań Province was an exporter of crops and agricultural produce and on account of its geographical and geopolitical location was perceived as part of the East Elbian economy (Ostelbien). At the same time it was an outlet for manufacturers of farming tools and machines from the neighboring provinces (mainly Brandenburg). At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the Greater Poland village was dominated by German great landed estates which within the span of a century managed to allegedly permanently link Greater Poland to Prussia and the German state. The participation of German landed estate owners in the economic and social life of Greater Poland in the years 1815-1914 must be assessed as a dynamic process of transformation of the entire Greater Poland within just one century. Those changes were still noticeable in the interwar period when a majority of the landed estate owners assumed Polish citizenship and actively contributed to the economic and political life of the Second Republic of Poland.

Civilization changes from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries had major impact on roles and duties of motherhood and mothers in society. Many scientists, including Polish researchers, were interested on this subject. In the scope of Prussian Partition there is a lack of elaboration covering this topic. In addition, the resulting papers do not include (or only include to a small extent) the view of women themselves, in this case the Wielkopolska’s women, on the roles and tasks that are socially assigned to them. The article aims to present the current state of research and formulates a list of research problems and tasks that should be undertaken to cover the state of knowledge about the concept of femininity and motherhood by the residents in Posen.
The author focuses on an attempt to define the idea of the patriotism of Wielkopolska, referring to the achievements of academia, literature and periodicals of the nineteenth/twentieth centuries, mainly from the region of Wielkopolska. He embeds the concept of the patriotism of the inhabitants of Wielkopolska in the concept of regionalism, in particular Wielkopolska regionalism, whose programmatic foundations and practice under Prussian partition were specific to this region.

Wszyscy tworzyli pismo wartościowe, popularne, poruszające aktualne problemy społeczne i polityczne.

In the years 1895–1914 there were 25 editors working for “Lech” who determined the content published in the journal. The group was dominated by people born in the Wielkopolska region, relatively young (between 20 and 30 years old) and well educated. Some of them had already had experience in journalism, working in editor’s offi ces in Poznań, Kościan and Bydgoszcz. More than half worked in this profession for many years. All of them created the journal that was valuable, popular, touching current social and political issues.
The article deals with Bernard Chrzanowski’s account of his participation in the work of the National League. Chrzanowski was a lawyer, national, educational and social activist in the Prussian partition. In the Second Republic he held the office of school superintendent and sat in the Senate. Chrzanowski’s account, presented in the text, contains invaluable information about Poznan members of the National League before 1918, being among the few surviving testimonies about the group’s activities.
The present article assesses Prof. Lenny A. Ureña Valerio scholarly debut in a broader context of the present literature in the post-colonial field. The reviewer pays attention to the breakthrough nature of the analysed book which is one of the first to indicate the fact that the German imperial expansion into the Polish lands in 1840–1920 was closely related to the German colonial enterprise in Africa.

Niniejszy artykuł ocenia naukowy debiut prof. Lenny A. Ureña Valerio w szerszym kontekście istniejącej literatury z obszaru studiów postkolonialnych.

So far the research on the “woman question” under the Prussian partition has been dominated by the national paradigm. Through it Polish women were presented as female guardians of the national identity who were not interested in the battle for women’s rights. On the other hand, there has been no research on the engagement of German women and information about it was limited to their commitment to nationalism. Therefore an image emerged in which those women were depicted as coming from two neighbouring but hostile nationalities and societies. However, the most recent research revealed that some cases of cooperation existed. In order to analyse them, however, we need to use another analytical perspective: abandon the paradigm of conflict and instead take the opportunities brought about by the transnational turn in historical research. Transnational history deals with everything that floats and meets beyond the borders of states and societies, and that also includes the concepts that mobilised women to get involved. Therefore it allows to discover common ground for Polish and German women under the Prussian partition that might have laid foundations for a community of shared values to address the “woman question”.
The Society of People’s Readings established in 1880 had a great influence on shaping the national consciousness of Poles living under the occupation. The main aim of the society was to be realized through the creation of a library network in the areas of the Prussian partition. People who lead the library of the Society of People’s Readings should not only share books, but above all, broaden the horizons of people from the lower social layer. That is why popular science meetings, reading meetings, evening parties and folk rallies were organized. In the Tuchola County in 1914 there were 12 libraries with 728 books in their collections. In 1921, the Tuchola district committee, consisting of 14 libraries, was one of the most energetic in the Pomeranian Voivodship.
The published text is a handwritten account of a 'pedagogical journey' that Wojciech Szweykowski (subsequently Rector of the University of Warsaw) undertook in 'German countries', that is to say, Saxony and Prussia. The purpose of the trip was to familiarise Szweykowski and his confraters with German school establishments and the teaching methods used therein. Szweykowski visited schools in Dresden, Meissen, Leipzig, Magdeburg, Brandenburg, Reckham and Potsdam. He also visited the famous Schulphort monastery school. Contrary to the title assigned by the author, the account is somewhat scant on descriptions of educational institutions, curricula and pedagogical methods. On the other hand, Szweykowski provided a very interesting, extensive and vivid description of the cities visited and the buildings there. He extensively described the art galleries and palaces he visited. He was also interested in the inhabitants of Saxony, their houses, costumes, character and farming methods. The manner in which salt was extracted also caught his attention. Szweykowski's text offers interesting reflections of a general nature on the history of Poland and the mutual relations of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Saxony.

Szweykowski odwiedził szkoły w Dreźnie, Miśni, Lipsku, Magdeburgu, Brandenburgu, Reckham i w Poczdamie. Obszernie opisał zwiedzane galerie sztuki i pałace. Zainteresował go również sposób pozyskiwania soli.
During difficult period of suppression of religious houses in the Prussian partition, exactly in the Wielkopolska region, the Congregation of Sisters Servants was established. This was possible, on the one hand, thanks to the determination of its founder, Edmund Bojanowski, and, on the other hand, thanks to the character of the ministry that this new community undertook. This article presents the history of the founding and the first years of development of the community of Sisters Servants, exactly until 1871, which is until the death of E. Bojanowski. The theme was presented mainly from the perspective of the relations of the new congregation to both church and lay authorities. On the example of the history of the Congregation of Sisters Servants was presented: on the one hand, the characteristics of the new forms of consecrated life that we encounter throughout the Church in the nineteenth century (including the partitions of Poland divided between the three invaders), on the other hand, the nature of the period of partition, in which the new religious communities were formed and functioned.

Although in recent decades Count Władysław Zamoyski has been attracting a lot of interest on the part of historians, which resulted in numerous papers and popular science works, he has not yet been the subject of an exhaustive scientific monograph. Its preparation is, however, going to be a difficult task for its future author. The many dispersed source materials and the Count’s more than 40 years long social, economic, and to a smaller extent political activity under the Prussian partition, in Galicia, among the Polish emigrants in France and during the first years of the Second Polish Republic – need to be described in the historical context, and, what follows, call for broad knowledge extending beyond these sources. Zamoyski’s path leading to his establishment in 1924 of the foundation ”Zakłady Kórnickie” – his life’s grandest work – should constitute the narrative axis weaving through all the chapters of his biography. It would be desirable to present extensively not only the Count’s activity in Galicia, Zakopane and his role in the famous dispute on Morskie Oko, but also his less researched and less known participation in the Polish-German fight for land in the Prussian partition in the late 19th and early 20th century.
