he article examines the mutual relations between the mendicants and guilds in the towns of Teutonic Order and Royal Prussia in the 14th–16th centuries. The preserved sources, in their widest extent, concern the issue of monastic prayer commitments. They show that, in relation to costs, only the largest and richest guilds could afford to have their own chapels, more had altars within monastic churches, and the poorest could only perhaps afford to pay individual monasteries for prayer obligations. The documents also indicate that at the time of the monastic economic crisis, caused by the progress of the Reformation and, consequently, the loss of income from the collection of alms and indulgences, they sought compensation for establishing cooperation with non–guild craftsmen, who, in exchange for paying fees to monasteries, were able to manufacture their products within their service buildings. These rights in Gdańsk and Toruń were confirmed by the king, usually specifying that the named individual could work only for the needs of the monasteries. Subsequent practice indicated that these provisions were violated, and attempts to sell goods caused numerous conflicts in which the town council became involved.
This article deals with the subject of the reception of periodic press in Royal Prussia in the most authoritative histories of the Polish press in the 18th century. Although the newspapers and periodicals of that region make up c. 25% of the total output of the press published in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, they have been ignored or at best marginalized, even in the most comprehensive and broadly-based studies.
The town scribe/notary (notarius civitatis) played the leading role in the structure of the chancellery of the mediaeval and modern city, exercising general control and being responsible for its operation, with criminal liability included. The article focuses on the office of the scribe in the lesser cities of the Royal Prussia in modern age, using the case study of one of them: Nowe nad Wisłą. It discusses the basic principles concerning the conditions of employing an notary, required competencies, remuneration and its relationship to that of other municipal professions, and types of additional benefits that were used as a rule to complement the regular salary. This provides a picture of the general position of the writer in the structure of the chancellery and organs of local authorities of a minor city in Pomerania.

Daje to obraz ogólnej pozycji pisarza w strukturze kancelarii i organach samorządu mniejszego miasta pomorskiego.
One of the most important stages of inheritance proceedings was the inventory of the legacy. When completed, an inventory gave the successors a chance to assess if they were interested in the acquisition of inheritance and to settle testators debts and claims. When an estate was highly indebted relatives had the right to opt out from it. Th is was the case with the inventory of the legacy of Samuel and Katarzyna Zawadzki from 1682. Th eir document is unique as it also contains a detailed list of the amounts spent on the funeral – costs of the ceremony, the wake, and ad pias causae. It is not only an example of source material but also an insight into the spiritual culture of nobility living in Royal Prussia, the more so as such information is not common in other similar inventories from the Middle Ages and the early modern period.

Manumission (manumissio, liberation, emancipation) was essential for the existing rights and obligations of a serf and his former master. It is interesting to analyse the formal side of this legal action and its content in terms of legal and actual consequences. The more so as awarding personal freedom was not at all uncommon in Prussia, and the literature on this subject usually refers to social consequences only. Based on the rich source material, the author discusses the manumission as a legal action in the practice of Prussia in the latter half of 17th and in the 18th centuries, focusing on its role, form, and the ways for insuring the new status of the former subject.

XVII i w XVIII w.
After the end of the Second Northern War t Malbork Jesuits were performing their Christian ministry in the area of the desolated Pomesanian diocese. The work was launched in extreme living conditions. They started they work immediately after ceasing military actions. The missionaries, preachers and operators were setting off for parishes which were abandoned during the war by secular clergy in Żuławy Malborskie (Werder), Prusy Górne (Oberland) and the borderlands with Lutheran Dutchy of Prussia. One of the major tasks of the Malbork Jesuits was recatholisation of diocese areas which was carried out by missionary work and religious convertions of the local dissidents (mainly Lutherans) to Catholicism. Thanks to the report entitled Series eorum Qui Societatis Jesu opera ab Anno Salutis 1662 ad 1678, Fidem Catholicam sunt amplexi in Polonia we can learn about their missionary work. The report was originally prepared for Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith in Rome. The source text is the subject of the analysis in this article.

Owoce pracy misyjnej jezuitów rezydencji malborskiej w latach 1662–1679 poznajemy dzięki tekstowi źródłowemu zatytułowanemu Series eorum Qui Societatis Jesu opera ab Anno Salutis 1662 ad 1678, Fidem Catholicam sunt amplexi in Polonia, który powstał w ramach sprawozdań Fructus Spiritualis przygotowywanych dla utworzonej w 1622 roku Kongregacji Propagandy Wiary w Rzymie. Jest on przedmiotem analizy w niniejszym artykule.
The chalice from the Corpus Christi hospital church in Elbląg is one of the most outstanding works of goldsmithing in the area of former Royal Prussia. On the basis of the goldsmith’s mark - which was still rare at the time - it is associated with the person of Dionisius Freymann, a goldsmith active in Elbląg since 1508. The chalice is distinguished by its meticulous workmanship, its high technical quality, but also by its high-class composition of form, using various means of artistic expression. It occupies a position of distinction in the entire abundant output of Prussian goldsmiths of the time. After 1945 it was thought to have been lost, donated to the Primate of Poland, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, after 1967 and given by him in 1970 to the Treasury of Gniezno Cathedral.

The Czapski family in the 18th century belonged to the Royal Prussian elite. Unfortunately, until today, they did not receive wider studies, which they undoubtedly deserve. Their activity was visible in the political, economic and cultural patronage. Several representatives of this rich Prussian family were developing book collections. An example is the brothers Tomasz and Paweł Tadeusz, who in their Gdańsk properties have collected many books on various subjects, written in different languages. Their younger sister Magdalena also became the owner of a large book collection thanks to a marriage with Hieronym Radziwiłł. Other members of the Czapski family also kept such collections in their palaces. The reason for their collection were both scientific and prestigious motives. Nevertheless, it is worth to discuss briefly the part of their activity, which strengthened their position in the hierarchy of the nobility in terms of the so-called external prestige.
The article discusses the place of art in the confessionalisation process that took place in the area of Lutheranism and Calvinism in Royal Prussia and Ducal Prussia. At the time of Martin Luther’s introduction of the reforms, print became the most important medium for the spread of the reformer’s ideas. Thus, the image was relegated to a secondary role and its existence in the church interior was treated in terms of adiaphora. Calvinism rejected the creation and hanging of any images with a figure God in them and Lutheranism accepted their existence as a didactic tool (especially as to inherited medieval altars) and an element to help visualise the confessional distinctiveness of Evangelicals in relation to Catholics. The text presents examples of the use of religious paintings or portraits of Luther to delineate such distinctiveness.

Artykuł mówi o miejscu sztuki w procesie konfesjonalizacji, który miał miejsce w obszarze luteranizmu i kalwinizmu w Prusach Królewskich i w Prusach Książęcych.

The goal of the article is an attempt to follow the reaction of mendicant communities to the events connected with Luther’s theses. This problem is presented based on the example of monasteries in Royal and Teutonic Prussia. As the final date of the study the author chose the year 1526. Besides the perspective of the institutional history of particular orders the problem is also presented from the point of view of ordinary monks and their individual decisions and motivations.
Royal Prussia was the most developed region of the Republic of Poland in the 18th century. Elbląg, along with Gdańsk and Toruń, was the largest city in Royal Prussia. The beginning of the 18th century was full of negative events for this city and the whole state. Already in 1700 the Northern War broke out, which lasted until 1721. At the same time, a plague epidemic broke out in Europe. In some areas it even reached several dozen percent. The aim of this article is to present the environment of the Catholics of Elbląg and to analyse the mortality rate in this group on the basis of the death book of the Old Town parish of St. Nicholas.

In 1525 the Pomezanian diocese ceased to exist. Further religious history of the area of the Vistula Lowlands and Powiśle was associated with the diocese of Chelmno, since 1821 the diocese of Warmia and since 1925 also with the diocese of Gdansk. The article presents the political, pastoral, interreligious, moral and economic conditions of life of the Catholic clergy inhabiting the region from the sixteenth century to the end of World War II.
This article presents the influence of Albrecht Dürer’s art and the Cranach’s workshop on the art of Ducal Prussia and particularly on their participation in the creation of objects of art on the court of Albrecht Hohenzollern. Initially, the author discusses the impact of Martin Schongauer’s and Albrecht Dürer’s graphic art on the paintings in the Royal Prussia during before Reformation. The two examples comes from Frombork and Elbląg (Royal Prussia) and one of one from the church in Rychnowo (Ducal Prussia). Next the paper shows other examples of the presence of works of art by both artists at the court of Albrecht Hohenzollern, the influence of Wittenberg and Nuremberg on the early modern royal court created by Prince Albrecht. The paper presents the artistic education of local artists and objects of art made by many skilled craftsmen for Albrecht. All these activities, as shown, have created a modern manor house/court of renaissance ruler.

The article presents religious aspects of the functioning of the emigrant community from the British Isles in Gdańsk, especially the Scots. They strove for their religious needs from the Middle Ages, as evidenced by the existence of chapels and altars in some of Gdansk’s churches. After the success of the Reformation, mainly Scottish Presbyterians settled in Gdańsk. Clergy from their home country were brought to their service. Both Presbyterian clergy and the wealthy Scottish merchant elite (also Presbyterian) dominated the religious object obtained in 1707, the so-called English Church. However, only some of the Presbyterians living in Gdańsk identified with this object, which in accordance with legal arrangements was having the character of an „ethnic” temple simultaneous with Anglicans. Most Scots slowly merged into the community of Gdańsk by creating family relationships was usingother Calvinist objects. In addition to Presbyterians and few Anglicans and Catholics also English radicals like Chiliasts and Quakers tried to settle in Gdańsk but unfavourable citylegislation and preventive actions effectively prevented this transfer.

Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia religijne aspekty funkcjonowania w Gdańsku społeczności emigrantów z Wysp Brytyjskich, przede wszystkim Szkotów. O zaopatrzenie swoich potrzeb religijnych zabiegali oni już w średniowieczu, o czym świadczy istnienie kaplic i ołtarzy w niektórych z gdańskich kościołów.
The article presents the common roots of Protestant art in both parts of Prussia, sketching the process of taking over the material substance of the Roman Church by Catholic parishes transformed into Protestant parishes and then building new church buildings. This process took place in Royal Prussia under the control of the townspeople and in Ducal Prussia under the control of the nobility. The citizens, dominating in the part of Prussia mentioned the first of here, was also decisive in furnishing urban and domain churches, and it cared for the status quo of Lutheranism and Calvinism, especially during the decisive activities of the Counter--Reformation Polish nobility. At the same time, the townspeople and Protestant clergy had an intellectual influence on the iconography of the art in ecclesiastical and secular interiors. In the second part of Prussia, the seizure of power over church structures by the court of the Lutheranized prince Albrecht Hohenzollern and the nobility ruled out conflicts over churches with the Catholic hierarchy. At the same time, they allowed for direct control over parishes and churches, making the church interiors almost private family pantheons. The influence of the gentry limited the influence of the townspeople and the clergy on pictorial art, the message of which in the interiors of rural churches was almost limited to didactic content. In spite of the domination of catechetical content in both parts of Prussia, painting and emblematic decorations related to piety have also appeared.

Artykuł prezentuje wspólne korzenie sztuki protestanckiej w obu częściach Prus, szkicując proces przejmowania substancji materialnej Kościoła rzymskiego przez parafie katolickie przekształcane w parafie ewangelickie a następnie budowy nowych budynków kościelnych. Wpływ szlachty ograniczył wpływ mieszczaństwa i duchowieństwa na sztukę obrazową, której przekaz we wnętrzach kościołów wiejskich został niemal ograniczony do treści dydaktycznych.
This article presents the history of Catholic and Lutheran churches during Swedish wars in the south part of Baltic sea the 17th Century. The Swedish rulers Gustav II Adolf and Carl X Gustav when they were fighting with Polish Republic during the first and second Swedish-Polish wars (commonly called the war at the mouth of the Vistula river and Swedish deluge) led to the strengthening of the religious conflict between Protestants and Catholics. The result in the Royal Prussia was, depending on the support of the authorities’ power, not only destruction or the mutual receipt of church buildings but also numerous robberies and exports of church cultural goods and liturgical equipment to Scandinavia. In this article the author discusses the fate of the individual buildings, their pastors and gives examples of church war losses. In the second part of the article the author presents the war expedition of the Polish-Lithuanian-Tatar troops to Ducal Prussia to break the alliance of Frederic William, Elector of Brandenburg with Charles X Gustav of Sveden. The soldiers destroyed dozens of Lutheran churches, burned down many cities and towns, and contributed to the death of thousands of people. Finally, the author mentioned grave monuments commemorating soldiers taking part in the both wars. The result of those events in the mid-17th century was the final imbalance of confessional balance and the growing, increasingly hostile attitude toward Polish Protestantim.

Artykuł niniejszy opowiada o świątyniach katolickich i kościołach ewangelickich, o które toczyły spory w XVII wieku podczas wojen szwedzkich. Władcy Szwecji Gustaw II Adolf oraz Karol X Gustaw prowadząc walki z Rzeczpospolitą w czasie I i II wojny polsko- -szwedzkiej zwanych potocznie wojną o ujście Wisły i potopem doprowadzili do wzmocnienia konfliktu religijnego pomiędzy protestantami a katolikami.
Zestawienie danych z tabel ruchu naturalnego w ujęciu Baszanowskiego z danymi z ksiąg metrykalnych wykazało wiele rozbieżności, m.in. w wyliczeniu wskaźnika dzietności u/ś oraz w liczbie dzieci nieślubnych.

Jan Baszanowski’s research on the demography of modern Gdańsk, which was carried out 30 years ago and published posthumously in 1995, is still the basic source of knowledge on the population relationships, vital statistics and statistics of religions in this city, one of the biggest in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The prematurely deceased author of a monograph on demographic changes in modern Gdańsk openly distanced himself from the registers, using almost exclusively collective studies, drawn up from the seventeenth century onwards, as tables of vital statistics. These tables are preserved nearly in their entirety, especially for the 18th century. However, there are also registry books from the same period, both Catholic and Protestant, whose state of preservation can be considered satisfactory. A survey of the records from these registry books allowed the author of this article to join the opinion of other researchers in proposing a renewed examination of demographic changes in modern Gdańsk, this time using registry books. A comparison of dates from Baszanowski’s tables of vital statistics with the data from the registers revealed a number of discrepancies, including in the calculation of births and marriages and the number of illegitimate children. We can speculate that this resulted from the double counting – or omitting – of individual data, which could be caused by the imprecise division (and observance) of pastoral districts/competences by individual Catholic churches/parishes. On the basis of the registry books, we also managed to show a tendency to manipulate data, for example undercounting or total omission of the data unfavorable from a religious point of view (e.g. the number of illegitimate children). Therefore, without questioning Jan Baszanowski’s general findings, especially regarding the number of inhabitants and the proportions among religions, it is worth re-examining other trends and demographical parameters. The registry books contain a range of other information which even more accurately describe the city’s community
