Na skutek reformy administracji publicznej w 1998 roku powołano do życia w Polsce 308 powiatów ziemskich i 65 miast na prawach powiatu. Na wniosek wielu inicjatyw obywatelskich dotyczących utworzenia nowych jednostek powiatowych w niektórych miastach rząd powołał dodatkowo 7 nowych powiatów. Obecnie funkcjonuje w Polsce 315 powiatów ziemskich i 64 miasta na prawach powiatu. W artykule przedstawiono znaczenie powiatów w systemie administracji publicznej.

In 1998 as a result of the reform of public administration were appointed to living in Poland 308 districts and 65 cities on laws of the district. At the request of many civil initiatives concerning creating new district units in some cities the government appointed 7 new districts additionally. At present in Poland 315 districts and 64 cities are functioning on laws of the district. In the article was described meaning of districts in the system of the civil service.
