The paper deals with Suarez's concept of a number as it is put forth in his famous Disputatines Metaphysicae. Suarez's explanation is led by the standard scholastic question with regard to the nature of a number, namely whether a number is the real species of a quantity. Suarez answers the question in a negative way and his main opponents are in this respect Thomists. Suarez rejects the Thomistic concept of a number according to which a number is the real species of a quantity. Suarez's argument is based on the claim that a number is not a being (ens) per se and that is why the Thomistic thesis is not valid. According to Suarez, a number is (broadly speaking) an aggregation of units, which of itself does not have a sufficient type of unity in order that it could constitute a being per se. However, a number has some kind of unity but the unity of a number comes from the cognitive act of our reason which subordinates an aggregation of units under some concept. Only if we consider an aggregation of units with this kind of unity can there be strictly speaking (or formally speaking) a number, e.g. the number of the apostles. A number taken in a formal way then somehow belongs (but not in the strict sense of a word) to the species of a quantity.

Systematic exposition of the concept of number cannot be found in Aquinas' works. Nevertheless, there are many places where the problem is touched. The problem is encountered on the one hand within the discussion of the category of quantity and on the other hand when Aquinas speaks about transcendental concepts and deals with the problem of numerical statements concerning God. The aim of the paper is to reconstruct, on the basis of Aquinas more or less fragmentary ideas, his concept of number.

The article reveals lexical and word building categories of quantity of adjectival lexis. They are expressed and opposed by word building means: ending - endless, paired - unpaired, exact - inexact, the indefinite big - the indefinite little, embodied - mataphorized, present - absent. Some suffixes and prefixes, as well as numerous numeral and adjectival bases within composites are the main means to differentiate quantity. Borrowed bases, which are means to express quantity, supplement numbers of words with original bases; they are primarily used in terminology.

The aim of the paper is to discuss the views, which approach of the qualitative or quantitative methods in social sciences is either separable, or irreconcilable. At first, the author gives an outline of those views and shows, how they deal with various aspects of the qualitative/quantitative divide. Next, he tries to indicate the roots of that divide in the works of Herbert Blumer. Further, his analysis of the categories of quantity, quality, and measure is designed to show that the divide in question is based on a wrong, one-sided understanding of the qualitative as well as quantitative approaches, which in fact can neither be separated nor conceived as contradictory.

Autonomy of science and art is an ideal of every civilized society. The distance between a certain society and this ideal depends on a large number of parameters, among which cultural enlightenment and consciousness of the main protagonists in realization of these two areas seem to be most important. Unfortunately, Serbia cannot boast with a high level of independency of creative processes. Nowadays, in formal sense, they enjoy a higher level of autonomy in terms of the state ideology; however, at the same time, they are essentially and basically restricted by it. The very notion of autonomy here is related to financial and, more than this, to ideological independence of free and creative thought, that is to the question to which extent scientific creativity manage to transcend current cultural-historical-social context and to find universal regularities of human civilization in it. Intensity of social changes and postmodern market ideologies are reflected both at official scientific policy and at internal determination of context and concept of ethnological/anthropological researching which quite often become trapped in the shallow of topicality.
