The present article is a thorough politological analysis of the contemporary international relations. It is aimed at presenting and attempting to assess Polish foreign policy in the years 1989-2009, giving special consideration to the policy towards small East-Central European countries, i.e. closer and further neighbors of Poland. Showing successes and failures of Polish foreign policy in the years 1989-2009, the author tries to answer the question about the new Polish foreign policy strategy after 2004, i.e. after its accession to the European Union. He proposes many interesting theses, including one that Poland, as a medium size country with its demographic, economic and military potential, could successfully play a role of a leader in East-Central Europe, or even function as a regional superpower gathering around it such countries as Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and even Hungary, Slovenia, Romania and Bulgaria, as well as Scandinavian countries. Taking into account the changing power order at the international arena at the beginning of the 21st century and the development of a new, multi-polarized international order, the author suggests that apart from the co-operation with the small countries of the region, Polish foreign policy should be based on the following assumptions: firstly, the European Union must be a foundation stone of Polish foreign policy; secondly, NATO must be the foundation for Polish security policy; thirdly, Poland should develop co-operation and versatile relations with the United States but it should not support those aspects of American foreign and security policy which do not serve the interests of the West, nor international stability, and question UN's credibility and are aimed at creating divisions in Europe and the world. The author used such research methods as an analysis of documents and international processes and a diagnostic comparative method.

The article presents the development of researches in natural languages' processing. It discusses beginnings of these studies, as well as changes in either the research methods, or their range and scope during last 60 years. The author describes two the most popular research methods: statistical analysis and generative grammars. He also evaluates briefly advantages and disadvantages of them both. Additionally, the article presents selected modern trends of NLP activities. Among the most popular current research trends in natural language processing, one can mention information retrieval or documents' grouping.

The article presents the method of participatory action research (PAR), its meaning, the use and misuse in the social policy. The thesis is formulated that PAR is a research approach useful in investigating and dealing with contemporary social problems. However, used by powerful institutions, governments and think-tanks it may be also an instrument of accomplishing particular or narrow political goals. In the first part various approaches and types of participatory action research are discussed. The second part of the text presents the different applications of PAR in social policy, especially in the local context. The third part of the article illustrates the threats resulting from expansion of PAR and shows the mechanisms of contributing to 'unsocial' goals by PAR.

The article critically analyses approaches that Slovak sociologists have been using in their analysis of the antisemitism in Slovakia after 1989. It describes quantitative methods used by Slovak sociologists and suggests a need of a complex approach to the research of the antisemitism. Author argues that modern antisemitism is de-judaized, while the Slovak researchers focus more on a research of the prejudices and the stereotypes toward the Jews. The research of the antisemitism in Slovakia is fully dominated by a Bogarduss scale of a social distance while the different relevant research methods are not used by the Slovak experts. Moreover, in the process of the interpretations of the public opinion surveys experts do not take into account the so-called escaping answers of the respondents and the attempts to run away from the answering sensitive questions. The socio-psychological research, reflecting authoritarian personality, anomy, alienation and the ontological insecurity of the common people as the sources of the antisemitism, is rather rare in Slovakia. Consequently, the quantitative research of the antisemitism in Slovakia can be evaluated as insufficient. De-judaized perspective of the antisemitism and even of Jews themselves in a Sartre's sense is remaining one of the greatest challenges for the sociologists researching antisemitism in Slovakia.

The history of experimentation differs strongly between economics and management studies. Until recently, most economists looked with uncertainty or even suspicion on experiments, while practitioners of management studies were prepared to explore the empirical scope of these in various ways. But nowadays, economics seems also to be turning to experimentation. It would be mistaken to underestimate the chances of scientific experiments managing to bridge the gulf that still divides economics from management studies, in methodology and in theoretical thinking. The article examines how this isolation arose and how experimentation may bring them closer together.

The article pertains to the methodological status of the Environmental Protection and the specificity of the research methods in this science. The Environmental Protection has recently become a recognized scientific discipline in Poland. As opposed to other European countries, it has been qualified as belonging to three fields of science. The current moment is the time of its formation and development as a scientific discipline. Separating it from other scientific disciplines evokes questions regarding its methodological connections with its mother disciplines. The research methods used in the Environmental Protection are similar to the methods applied in the discipline of chemistry, natural sciences and agriculture. The aforementioned methods possess also other specific features, take the example of the fact that they are regulated by the law and benefit from the technologically advanced examination apparatus. The article describes the selected methods in the Environmental Protection and poses the question regarding the methodology applied in this science.

Teaching methodology of social research in pedagogic programmes we have experienced students’ great interest in the possibilities of using photography and photographing practices in the research projects carried out by them. Also the personal interest in photography and the attempts of using it in our research were a reason for us deciding to prepare a project of workshops devoted to the research strategies that use photography. Our aim was to make the most of students’ individual interests and their conscious transfer into the space of research activities. Simultaneously, the suggested classes were also a specific didactic provocation. This article discusses our project, which was carried out in the summer semester of the academic year of 2010/2011

A survey of conceptual, theoretical and methodological studies and apprehension of the quality of life. Following a brief historical review, the survey illustrates an integration model of the quality of life, which distinguishes between basal (universal), individual (civilizing) and elite (cultural-spiritual) quality of life; the meaning of life operates there as a systematic (universal) psycho-regulator of 'good' life. Up to now, the Slovak psychologists have not created a specific method of their own, they have adapted several methods from abroad, e.g. WHOQOL-BREF, Bern Questionnaire of Well-Being, Irish SEIQoL and others. Listed in the references are major specialized events (workshops and conferences) on the quality of life in the Slovak Republic in 1994 - 2006 as well as corresponding the grant research projects. The study concludes with the demands for plausible psychological research of the quality of life as the new paradigm for a positive psychology movement.

The author characterizes selected aspects of methods of literature analysis and criticism in library and information science and observes a significant increase of researchers' interest in this research method in 21st century informatology and library studies. Two basic roles of literature analysis and criticism in scholarly research are analyzed - the auxiliary (heuristic) and the independent (knowledge-creating) one. Stages and variants of the analysis are described, including a traditional analysis, systematic review and meta-analysis. The closing part of the article includes results of pilot research on selected properties and features of literature analysis and criticism in contemporary library and information science.
