Following the movement and origin of goods in the supply chain is an essential element in the decision-making process in a dynamic environment. Possessing certain and precise information on the past and present, and the possibility of anticipating future events influence a firm’s effectiveness in decision-making in the key areas of storage, production planning, production and distribution of goods. Building an integrated supply chain model in accordance with the demands of traceability for the needs of the paper, printing, publishing and magazine and newspaper distribution industries poses an essential challenge for all who operate in the area widely understood as printing. This article presents the framework of required empirical research essential to designing a network for exchanging data to enable the movement and origin of goods to be tracked at every stage of production in accordance with GS1 standards. It presents a review of those computer techniques for the automatic identification of goods, documents, and services in radiolocation technology judged by the author to be the most innovative among the available solutions. The methodology presented herein should function as a tool for building a system of traceability that enables the flow of labeled objects sent between business partners in the supply chain to be monitored, regardless of its complexity.
