Regular theological institutes in the Czech Lands in the first half of the twentieth century were private institutes of an academic nature. There is not much known about their inner activities and the structure of studies. The aim of this contribution is to reconstruct the reality of the education and acquaint readers with the organization of studies at the concrete regular educational establishment of the Redemptorist fathers in Obořiště near Příbram, from the establishment of the institute in 1902 up until its abolition in 1950. On the basis of studies of archive sources, there would seem to have been an excellent ability on the part of Czech Redemptorists to react flexibly to the requirements of legal prescriptions of the Church and of the state, especially during the 1930s. This theological institute reached a high level of expertise and also a high quality in terms of the regular formation of students. The end of the 1940s denoted another progressive development in the studies which ended, however, with the intervention of the Communist totalitarian powers.
O. Pirożyński był przede wszystkim kierownikiem duchowym, wychowawcą i publicystą dbającym o moralne wychowanie młodzieży, zatroskanym o stosowne jej przygotowanie do życia rodzinnego, społecznego i obywatelskiego.

Reading and educational manuals appeared on the Polish editorial market in the 19th century, providing guidelines on the topic of harms and advantages of reading. During the interwar period such recommendation bibliographies were prepared by educational activists, teachers, lecturers, librarians as well as priests and lay persons related to the Catholic Church. The article presents the content characteristic of a reading manual comprised by Fr. Marian Pirożyński Co czytać? Poradnik dla czytających książki (What to Read? Reader’s Companion, Cracow, 1932). Fr. Pirożyński was above all a spiritual guide, tutor and publicist taking care about moral education of the youth, concerned about its preparation for family, social and civic life. The article draws attention to prem-ises leading the Redemptorist to comprise a catalogue of Polish and foreign novels evaluated from the point of view of ethics rather than literary criticism. It gives charac-teristics and examples of literary works with positive, negative or neutral evaluation. It also presents interwar and contemporary reviews of Fr. Pirożyński’s publications and emphasises strong relations of the manual to the Church teaching.
The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) continued their retreat and missionary work throughout the Second World War. The apostolate offered people consolation, gave hope and faith in a better tomorrow; it reinforced their patriotism and sense of national identity.

Zgromadzenie Najświętszego Odkupiciela (redemptorystów) w okresie II wojny światowej nie ustawało w pracy rekolekcyjno-misyjnej. Apostolat podtrzymywał ludzi na duchu, dawał nadzieję i rozbudzał wiarę w lepsze jutro, wzmacniał patriotyzm i poczucie tożsamości narodowej.
The history of the Minor Redemptorist Seminary in Torun reflects the dynamic growth of the congregation in the interwar period. Despite the harsh material and social conditions, the staff and the students were doing their best to fulfil generously the Redemptorist vocation: “soli Dei et studiis”. The formation process had many stages and the juniorate, which functioned as a minor seminary in accordance with the decrees of the Council of Trent, was the first of them. The institution served as private secondary school focused in Arts and Humanities whose alumni would be prepared for the Philosophical and Theological studies that would follow in the next stage of formation. This paper presents the history of the Torun Juniorate House from 1921 till 1939. It also makes references to the previous period since the founding of the institution in 1895 and to the events of the war campaign in September 1939. The article is based on the research of the documents of Roman and Polish collections as well as of the secondary literature.
